Low-Ball Total Loss Estimate
My father has been a USAA member for 32 years. I have been a USAA member for 18 years. My husband and I are both military members. While the coverage, cost, and customer service has been average to above average in most of our encounters, we have recently found out the hard way that the auto insurance total loss department is less than fair. The customer service has been horrendous. It has been nearly a month since the accident (which wasn't my fault), and no "fair market value" check has been forthcoming so I can replace my car. They are offering $12,000 for a car listed for over $17,000 in my area and won't negotiate.
Low-Ball Total Loss Estimate
My car was rear ended by somebody insured by USAA. USAA declared it a total loss. USAA made me a settlement offer that is way short of the amount required to replace the vehicle. I objected and sent them local comps from private party car ads. USAA would not even look at the comps.
did a great job
If you had a problem with a USAA customer because of an accident, then take it up with them. Go complain to your own insurance company for not helping you out when you needed them the most. USAA is the premier insurance and banking company, hands down.
Notice the vast majority of complaints are from people that have bankruptcies? USAA is a preferred risk company, so if you cant keep your finances straight... We recently had an at fault accident (haven't seen the premium increase yet, but have enough maturity to understand my rate IS going to go up) and everything went exceptionally well. There was a slight misunderstanding with rental car coverage, but a calm, rational discussion with claims fixed that up pronto. To you customer service critics I say, try treating the rep on the phone with the same respect you expect, you know the old saying: more flies with honey.
Make a claim with these guys and YOU LOSE.
I have had USAA insurance for over 25 years and this was the first accident I have been in. It was not my fault, but I have $100,000 Med Pay to take care of these things. USAA denied claim after claim on false premises, causing my care providers to sue me for payment of tens of thousands of dollars.
Hung Up On
My CR-V was rear ended by a person with USAA. He was 100% at fault. 2 weeks later USAA tells me that my car is a total loss. I had my insurance check my car out and they said it was totally repairable. During the 2 weeks USAA had my vehicle, I could not get in touch with ANYONE, and when I did they could not tell me anything, and I was hung up on.
Poor Customer Service
I found the company to be very unhelpful and unorganized. It would take weeks for a call back. It took several months until they even bothered to ask what happened in the accident. Even though I did everything they asked in the time period they asked me to, and I caught the person who hit my car and ran (a USAA member), they were still uncooperative. They did not pay the entire quote to fix the car ($1000 difference). They estimated 10 bus. days for repair, and when the shop took 15, they left it to me to pay the $200 difference for the rental car.
RECENT USAA CLAIM
About two months ago, the left rear end of my Toyota was damaged by someone backing up a large moving van while my car was in the parking lot of my apartment complex. I called USAA and explained the situation. They gave me two options: to file under USAA and pay the $200 deductible or file under the moving van company with no deductible. HOWEVER, the agent advised me that this particular company was very difficult to work with and the time to handle the claim would probably be extensive. Well, I filed the claim with USAA. I went to the body shop recommended by USAA, whom I have used before with great satisfaction, and got the estimate of about $600.00 . INSTEAD of paying the $200 deductible, the body shop allowed a $100 appearance fee because of other previous damage that was not caused from this incident and would be left as is. So I paid the $100.00. The rental car was paid by USAA too since this incident was no fault of my own. And NOW about 1 month later, I get a call that the moving van company has agreed to reimburse my $100.00 that I paid for the repair. It will be sent by electronic transfer. The agent had to work very hard to get them to agree to do this. So, all the expenses of the incident have been paid at no cost to me, and rightly so! I guess I was an exception because this particular agent was courteous and expressed a desire to provide the best customer service. FORTUNATELY I have not had to worry about bankruptcy and have not had any negative experience with USAA for over 30 years. I have even had claims when it was my fault! NO they are NOT PERFECT, but I will continue with USAA until the time I no longer receive the kind of service I have been lucky to get so far. For those who have had such negative experiences, I wish that you could have been as luck as I have been for such a long time. COUNT ME LUCKY,
Poor Claims Process Practices
I had one of their drivers hit me. I took my truck to get looked at. It took all day to hear back from them. Then they told me that I could only go to one place to rent a truck. When I got there, they did not have one, so they had to give me an SUV. It took 2 weeks for them to go look at my truck. When they did, they only wanted to give me the cost of fixing the truck. They mailed the check said that it would take 2 weeks to get here.
I had a recent incident in which they offered me a low amount for my car that was hit by their young driver who was issued a ticket for failure to stop at a stop sign. After complaining, they "found an error in my report" and are now willing to offer nearly $2,000 more.
