Unfortunately, I am unable to discontinue service with UHC as this is my company's chosen provider. I have been contacting them for over 1 year to get a claim paid with the most recent conversation being a 2 hour call today in which I was disconnected twice. Of course, you can't call in and reconnect with the individual to which you were speaking. You have to go through the entire automated call routing process. Each time that I have contacted them regarding this claim, they have assured me that the issue has been resolved and there is no need for me to do anything further and that the payment would be remitted. Well, what do you know, the health care provider has now sent me to a collection agency!!
Our premiums were raised 11% this year, up to $17,000 for a family of four. Our deductible got raised to $2,500 PER PERSON. Our co-pays went from $30 to $50, with even less coverage than before, no out-of-network coverage at all, and half the medications my family takes is no longer covered.
They try whatever they can to avoid paying claims or try to slap me with incorrectly applied coinsurance charges. When called to make fixes nothing happens until maybe the 3rd or 4th call if that. By that time the charges are sitting with a collection agency.
My oral and maxifollacial surgeon stopped taking United Health Care because they were paying 25 cents on the dollar, so he is now out-of-network. I had orthodontic jaw surgery in 2006 and my out-of-network max was $4,000. I exceeded that amount BEFORE surgery. They never reimbursed me, nor did they cover 100% after the $4,000. We ended up paying him over $6,000 from out of our own pocket.
Extremely Poor Service
Failure to respond to letters. ZERO customer service. No one EVER returns calls. Poor claim handling appears to be endemic to their corporate culture.
Complicated and Expensive
United Health Care has created a complex process that makes me question if they're just selling health insurance for their own sake of making a buck, and not necessarily providing a reasonable insurance to their members. Just a regular visit is a significant co-pay. .
Poor Claims Process Practices
I am a college student. Unfortunately this was my school's option as a reasonable health care plan. UHC continually claimed that they did not receive the bill from the hospital. The bill finally showed up in my United account as being received and even partially paid.
surgery not covered
I started a six month process to have gastric bypass surgery with my doctor. United Heathcare pre-certified me for approval for this surgery if I meet certain criteria and went through a six month program with my doctor. After completion of the program, it came time to schedule the surgery and United Heath denied my claim stating there was an exclusion on my policy for this type of surgery even though both myself and my doctor called United to verify that this surgery was covered under my plan. After countless hours on the phone with reps, the best explanation that they could come up with was that the reps that my doctor and myself spoke with over 6 months ago were wrong and had given us misinformation about what was covered under my policy.
No Coverage for our newborn
After they raised our insurance prices we continued to stay. Then after having our newborn son, they refused to add him to our insurance, making us find his own insurance.
Deplorable Customer Service
My husband's company switched to UHC the beginning of 2008 and we have had NOTHING but problems with them. Extremely poor customer service (can never talk to a supervisor without arguing first), even worse claim review and reimbursement. Incorrect information is repeatedly given out by their representatives.
