Former Employee POV
Stay away from Travelers. As a former employee, I witnessed how the claim department ran off all of the older employees. The new claim staff does not care about the policy holders. They just struggle to keep up with the "metrics" Policy holders are the least of the concern as the Travelers claim employee is in fear of his/her job every day just checking the boxes. Please purchase your coverage from smaller mutual companies that don't abuse their employees.
This company still owes me back pay from august. The claims process is disappointingly slow!
Their Mistake, Our Loss
We got travelers for our car upholstery business about a year ago. We had a small accident in our shop and put in a claim with them. They told us we don't even have auto coverage. We have the application we sent requesting auto insurance. They sent us the quote. We bought the coverage and paid for it in full for the year. They sent us the COI stating that we DO have auto coverage. Apparently someone forgot to add it to our policy. They made a mistake. They admitted it, but never did anything to cover the loss. We waited and waited for them to call us. They never did. Every time we called, they would tell us the person who is handling your case is very busy cant talk to you. We were so frustrated with them that we ended up paying yourself.
High Premiums, Low Benefits
My experience in 2011 with a claim compelled me to warn others about Travelers failure to pay for damages supposedly covered in the policy. Although the low bid for my repairs was $2,500, Travelers would pay only $700 of the cost. Their initial response was very slow. After that, they did not answer the phone or return calls. They send emails but forget to include the attachments,and fail to respond to return emails. They promised to provide info on the contractors they use to establish their payment but failed to provide anything. I am sure there are other insurance companies that are as bad as Travelers but it is difficult to imagine any that are worse.
I had a policy with for the last 6 months. They managed to charge me 7 times at the same rate at which they had quoted me for the 6 month period. And when I bought this up, they called it their billing policy. They said they increased their premium and sent me a mail regarding it which I never did get.
Other Party Paid More
I had an accident that was not my fault and just because the other party had children in the vehicle (unrestrained) they paid them $89,000. They gave us $3,000 for our car.
I have stayed with them for 7 years and this was my first time filing for a claim. I had a frozen pipe burst. The damage is about $10,000. The Travelers adjuster only paid about $2,000 and claims that the soaked and buckled wooden floor only needs re-finishing.
Very Good Service
I have been insured with Travelers now for 10 years and have always had excellent service on my auto claims. I have found that I get better customer service because I use a local agent. My rates have gone up at times due to rate increases and accident surcharges, but they have also gone down at times.
Slow Claim Processing
I have Travelers Home owner insurance through Geico. It's over 8 months since I had a house fire and Travelers still hasn't finished settling my claim. I couldn't afforded to pay for the construction/repairs myself, but even if I could have, I was told by the Travelers that I can't make repairs in case they need to reinspect the property. About 3 weeks ago I received partial payment for my claim, so I've started repairs. I hope by next month, before the winter comes, I'll be back home again and maybe the claim will be finally settled.
Sorry Claims Service
We have an additional rider on our homeowner's policy to cover the septic tank in case of a backup. When I filed a claim due to the fact that my septic tank backed up and flooded my house, the adjuster said that the damage was not covered because the water that filled my septic tank causing it to flood came from the property across the street. They told me that the damage that was estimated to be around $20,000 was not an issue that they are responsible for. The house is no longer livable.
