Selective has some great home coverage comparable to Chubb for a lot lower premium! Elite home policy includes form ho-5, great discounts for higher deductibles. (Which is waived for large losses like Chubb),
Low Ball Estimate
At first a Selective Insurance agent was sent out to look at the damage. He then arranged for a contractor to come out to our home. The contractor did some minimal initial work and then never returned. I did not hear back from my adjuster and so I proactively got 2 estimates for what the repairs to our garage would cost. The Selective adjuster who was handling the claim quickly tried to settle for an amount that was far below the lowest estimate. I assumed that I was responsible for the costs up to my deductible of $1000 and then that the rest of the costs would be taken care of by Selective Insurance. The way that Selective is trying to settle the claim is by issuing a check based in the lowest estimate available minus deductible.
Long Wait, Low Settlement
After the huge, record-breaking storm that hit the tri-state area, many of us lost everything. We all know that the insurance companies were overburdened with all kind of claims. I made my claim the morning after the storm and was informed that someone would get back to me within 48 hours. Two weeks went by before Selective Insurance sent an adjuster. I spent that whole time calling the company, trying to get some idea of when someone would come and what I could expect. The settlement ended up being far less than three different contractors were looking for to do the job.
Accidentally Cancelled Account??
My mother purchased a Selective Insurance policy in 1994 and since then has been making monthly payments from her bank account. When they stopped automatically withdrawing payment, I called the customer service line. The rep told me that the policy was being canceled because of non-payment. The policy she bough was for $50,000. Since she first signed the papers and the policy went into effect she had paid in almost $120,000. Now they are trying to say that she will be forfeiting all of that money because she hasn't paid even though she has bank statements that show otherwise.
A customer of Selective Insurance hit our car while we were driving down the highway and continued to drive away. We chased him until he finally stopped so that we could exchange information. We've called Selective to start a claim, but since then we have hears nothing back. We have left multiple messages, but all of our inquiries are being ignored.
Little Coverage After Flood
After a recent hurricane, our basement was filled with water after. The Selective Insurance flood adjuster arrived a week after I made the claim and by then most of the water had already been pumped out of the basement. He estimated that my flood line was 7 feet. The floor damage portion of my claim was automatically denied by Selective Insurance Co. They stated that "any damage to the floors is indirectly related to the flooding event". How can obvious moisture damage NOT be directly related to this event?
Won't Cover Mold
I was having a difficult time breathing and needed to check into a hospital. It was discovered I had mold in my attic. For more than 20 years, I have paid for mold insurance. After I made my claim was made, the insurance company came out and performed a full investigation. The claim was DENIED. Selective's report stated that the mold came in from the outside and was therefore not covered. Over the last few years, I have had several water leaks though due to my old pipes and I know that's what led to the mold growing.
