Check Your Pricing!Apr 03 2012
I moved several hundred miles last year and decided to rent a house while we decided where we wanted to live after my relocation. Since we needed to change insurance companies, we went with Progressive for both of our cars and the rental insurance on the house. The first year was OK pricing. I figured the renewal would be better as we built some history with the company. The renewal for the rental insurance arrived and the rate went up over 25%. Now we have never had an insurance claim (with them or any other carrier), there are no changes to the policy and we have paid everything on time. In looking at the coverages, they increased the 'surcharge' for the number of units by 191%. I called them and they said "if you were in an apartment, the risk would be less, but since you are in a single family home, the risk is greater." I can understand that, but they don't insure the building, just contents on a rental property. This is a home that is less than 10 years old, 50 feet from a fire hydrant, under 2 miles from a fire station, worth over $300,000, not in a flood plain, low crime area... you get the picture... a great insurance risk.
