History of Nationwide Insurance
Nationwide Insurance provides insurance and financial services including auto, fire, life, health, commercial insurance, administrative services, annuities, mutual funds, pensions, and long-term savings plans. Nationwide Insurance ranks 98th on the Fortune 100, has about 35,000 employees and more than 16 million policies in force. Nationwide Insurance is the largest insurance and finance Company located in Columbus, Ohio. Nationwide insurance was founded in 1925 when the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation incorporated Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. Nationwide insurance started with 100 policyholders. Automobile insurance was the first product developed by the company. In 1955, the company changed its name to Nationwide Insurance.
NOT on your side
I have had Nationwide Insurance for several years, for both my home and cars. When I was in an accident at partial fault, Nationwide dealt with the other driver without contacting me first. They gave him an estimate at a higher cost than the estimate that he had submitted to me and told him he was entitled to this greater amount. They were unwilling to investigate the situation and took his word over mine.
Not On Your Side
My car was stolen and they accused me of stealing it. They also procrastinated on setting up my rental car. They also had me interrogated by a Sherrif and after the officer found me not guilty, they continued to investigate and didn't return my belongings that were left in my car, then sold the car and billed me for "their loss".
Satisfied with service
I was recently involved in an accident with a driver who also had coverage with Nationwide. The other driver ran a stoplight and hit me on the passenger side, totaling my car. In no time, I was contacted by two Nationwide medical adjusters who called to ask how I was doing and told me that all my medical bills would be covered. I went to my doctor's office to be checked out and then to the hospital for an x-ray of my neck. Nationwide immediately got copies of my bills and reimbursed me quickly. They were courteous, caring, and responsive. They also set me up in a rental car that was directly billed to Nationwide. Before the wreck I had thought about changing insurance companies because I thought that Nationwide's rates were higher but after this experience I plan to keep my coverage with Nationwide.
My car was stolen and recovered within 3 days. I had it towed to dealership. It was there for 4 weeks and no approval was given for repairs. The appraiser spray painted the damages with something that won't was off. My claim was turned over to an investigator who implied we might be guilty of fraud. I'm about to withdraw my claim and have the car repaired at my expense.

Poor Claims Process Practices
I had a false claim filed against me. I had witnesses, sworn statements, and a confession from the person's family. Yet their claims people decided to pay the claim without looking into any of it. They said I never told them I had this info. When I got the initial letter saying I was being sued I pleaded with the adjuster and the office to not give in, to look further into it and to contact me because I wanted to be at all proceedings. They told me these things take a while, but they'd get back with me. Well they got back with me all right, to tell me they paid out the claim and my policy was not being renewed, unless of course I was willing to pay the new premium which went from $700 to $2500!
Poor Claims Process Practices
My husband had "under-insured/uninsured" on our policy. He was hit by a dump truck. The owner has American Family. They offered settlement out of court. Nationwide, our own insurance teamed up with other driver's insurance against us and tried to accuse my husband of negligence. That didn't work so they have their "in house" doctor check my husband and says nothing wrong with him.
They refused to renew my homeowner's policy because of a claim that was not not fault. I guess as long as they don't receive a claim, they will stand by your side.
Claim not paid!
My policy was canceled because I didn't pay the bill amount in full. My wife had an accident 3 days after the policy was canceled. They declined to pay for the accident.
Dropped After Making A Claim
As long as you have no claims, Nationwide is on your side. If you have a claim, they will drop your coverage ASAP.
