H. Edward Hanway
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
H. Edward Hanway was named chairman and chief executive officer of CIGNA Corporation in 2000. Prior to that, he served the company for a year as president and chief operating officer. From 1996 to 1999 he served as president of CIGNA HealthCare, and from 1989 to 1996 as president of CIGNA International.
Hanway joined Insurance Company of North America (INA), a CIGNA predecessor company, in 1978 as assistant controller, and was appointed to management and executive roles of increasing responsibility through the merger in 1982 of INA and Connecticut General, which formed CIGNA.
A past chairman of the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare, Hanway is a leader in the effort to improve the quality, accessibility and affordability of health care in the United States. He is an outspoken advocate at the national level for greater transparency in the health care quality and cost information available to consumers and a strong proponent of national quality standards for health care providers.
Through the years, Hanway has been active in a wide range of issues and initiatives associated with children’s health, education and international business. He currently serves on the board of advisors of the March of Dimes Foundation, the board of trustees of Loyola College of Baltimore and the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships. He also serves on the board of directors of The Philadelphia Orchestra and is a member of The Business Roundtable.
A member of the Pennsylvania and American Institutes of Certified Public Accountants, Hanway graduated from Loyola College of Baltimore (B.A., 1974) and Widener University (M.B.A., 1984).
Michael W. Bell
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Michael W. Bell was named executive vice president and chief financial officer of CIGNA Corporation in December 2002. In this capacity, he has the leadership responsibility for all financial operations and functions. He also has the management responsibility for CIGNA’s Investment Management, Strategic Planning, and run-off businesses. Prior to his appointment, Bell served for two years as president of CIGNA Group Insurance.
Bell joined CIGNA in 1984 and advanced through management positions at CIGNA Retirement & Investment Services, CIGNA HealthCare and CIGNA’s former individual insurance division. He was named vice president and chief financial officer for CIGNA’s Intracorp subsidiary in March 1994 and vice president and actuary for CIGNA HealthCare in July 1995. He also served as vice president of Corporate Accounting and Planning from 1997 through July 2000.
Bell is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Illinois (B.S., 1985). He is also a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries.
David M. Cordani
David Cordani was named president of CIGNA HealthCare, one of the nation’s largest providers of group medical and specialty health care products and services, in July 2005. He previously had served as president of Health Segments for CIGNA HealthCare and was responsible for the company’s distribution, marketing and underwriting for all customer segments. Prior to this assignment, Cordani had served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of CIGNA HealthCare since September 2002.
He has held numerous positions at CIGNA, including controller for CIGNA Corporation. He also served as president of CIGNA HealthCare’s Southeast Region, and chief financial officer of CIGNA HealthCare’s field operations.
Before joining CIGNA, Cordani was with Coopers & Lybrand.
Cordani serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Manufacturers.
Cordani is a graduate of Texas A&M (B.S., 1988) and the University of Hartford (M.B.A. in marketing, 1994). He is also a Chartered Financial Consultant and a Certified Public Accountant.
Paul E. Hartley
Paul E. Hartley was named president of CIGNA International in June 2005, and has executive management responsibility for the strategic planning, business development and financial management of all of CIGNA’s life, accident and health insurance and expatriate health care businesses outside of the United States. He previously had served as chief executive officer of CIGNA International’s Asia-Pacific Operations.
Hartley joined CIGNA International in 1985 as a financial controller in the Caribbean region following his previous career in the public accounting profession. He was later country head of CIGNA’s Hong Kong life operations and then appointed chief operating officer of CIGNA’s Life and Property & Casualty businesses in Asia Pacific in 1996.
Hartley is a graduate of the University of Sheffield & Hallam, England. He holds an FCA certification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and is a member of the British Institute of Management. He has served on a number of industry boards in Hong Kong and Singapore and is a member of the Pacific Insurance Council.
John M. Murabito
Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Services
John Murabito was named executive vice president of CIGNA Corporation in July 2003 with responsibility for driving growth in CIGNA’s businesses through an effective human resources and people strategy. He is responsible for human resources strategy and planning, staffing, talent management and succession processes, compensation and benefits, leadership development and training, employee relations, corporate medical operations, and employee assistance programs. He is also in charge of a variety of corporate-wide administrative areas including, travel, security, purchasing, real estate and other business support services.
Prior to joining CIGNA, Murabito served as senior vice president of human resources and corporate services at Monsanto. His background includes more than 20 years of extensive related experience with the Frito-Lay division of PepsiCo, Symbion, Inc. and The Trane Company.
Murabito is a graduate of Augustana College in Illinois (B.A., 1980) and the University of Iowa (M.A., 1983). He serves on the boards of directors of Cornell University’s Center for Advanced Human Resources Studies and the University of South Carolina’s Riegel & Emory School of Business. He serves as a member of the Human Resources Policy Association, as well as the Human Resources Research Group.
Carol Ann Petren, Esq.
Executive Vice President and General Counsel
Carol Ann Petren was named Executive Vice President and General Counsel of CIGNA Corporation in May 2006 and is responsible for the company’s legal and public affairs activities.
Prior to joining CIGNA, Petren served as senior vice president and deputy general counsel of MCI, being responsible for federal, state and international regulatory matters, investigations, litigation, employment law, federal and state government affairs, law department operations and compliance. Before MCI, Petren served as deputy general counsel at Sears, Roebuck and Co., following 18 years in litigation defense practice with law firms in Washington, DC. Earlier in her career, she served as a prosecutor in Jackson County, Mo., as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri and as counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Standards of Official Conduct.
Petren is a magna cum laude graduate of Boston College and received her J.D. and L.L.M. degrees from the University Of Missouri School Of Law.
Karen S. Rohan
President, CIGNA Group Insurance and President, CIGNA Dental & Vision Care
In November 2005, Karen Rohan was named president of CIGNA Group Insurance, responsible for CIGNA’s Life and Disability segment results, and as president of CIGNA Life Insurance Company of New York (CILICONY) and the Life Insurance Company of North America (LINA). In addition, Rohan will continue to serve as president of CIGNA Dental & Vision Care. Prior to this appointment, she served as president of CIGNA Specialty Companies.
Rohan joined CIGNA in 1991 and advanced through numerous leadership roles. She served as controller and senior vice president of underwriting for CIGNA HealthCare and as financial officer for CIGNA HealthCare’s field operations, where she improved earnings performance and drove improvements in broker/sales operations, membership reporting, contracting and claim accuracy. Additionally, she led the design and implementation of a new CIGNA HealthCare organizational structure.
Rohan is a graduate of Boston College (B.S., 1984) and Boston University (M.B.A., 1999). She is also a Certified Public Accountant.
Scott A. Storrer
Executive Vice President Service Operations & Information Technology
Scott Storrer is executive vice president, Service Operations and Information Technology for CIGNA Corporation. In this role, he is responsible for consumer, employer and provider services, process management and strategic initiatives for CIGNA, and for the corporation’s systems development, data processing and telecommunications worldwide.
Storrer joined CIGNA in May 2001 and became senior vice president of Disability Management Solutions and Customer Service for CIGNA’s Group Insurance division. In October 2002, Storrer was named senior vice president of Service Operations for CIGNA HealthCare, and also served as the head of CIGNA’s Information Technology organization since November 2004. He was named to the executive vice president, Service Operations and Information Technology position in June 2005.
Previously Storrer was with Liberty Mutual Group where he held a variety of senior leadership roles of increasing responsibility during an eight year period. Prior to joining Liberty, he was with General Electric Company, where he was a graduate of the General Electric Financial Management Program.
A graduate of DePauw University, Storrer earned a master’s of business administration from Boston University. In addition, he has attended several executive and financial management programs in the United States, Canada and Japan.
