The Blue Cross brand originated in 1929 at Baylor University with a plan offering teachers three weeks of hospital care for $6 per year. As the company grew, it began offering coverage to other employee groups in Dallas and later expanded to national coverage. The Blue Shield brand was developed at the start of last century with lumber and mining employers in the Pacific Northwest paying a monthly fee to a designated group of physicians.Blue Shield and the Blue Cross Association merged in 1982 to become the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
In 1938 Capital Hospital Service was formed and over the next thirty years grew to include 19 counties. In 1939 the Hospital Service Plan of the Lehigh Valley incorporated, it would later become Blue Cross of the Lehigh Valley, moving its headquarters to Allentown. In 1965 Capital Hospital Service would become Capital Blue Cross and in 1985 the company merged with Blue Cross of Lehigh Valley and the coverage area grew to 21 counties.
Today, the company has almost one million members and serves 21 counties throughout central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. It employs around 2000 was ranked by J.D. Power and Associates as “Highest in Member Satisfaction Among Commercial Health Plans in Pennsylvania” in 2010. Its provider network is far-reaching with more than 11,000 medical professionals and providers and 37 hospitals available to serve and deliver care to its members.
