Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware (BCBSDE) offers a comprehensive array of health insurance products to nearly 400,000 members. As an independent member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, the company is the largest and most respected health benefits provider in the state. BCBSDE is a trusted member of the community they serve, which includes many of the same members and healthcare providers they already work with.
The Blue Cross brand originated in 1929 at Baylor University with a plan offering teachers three weeks of hospital care for $6 per year. As the company grew, it began offering coverage to other employee groups in Dallas and later expanded to national coverage. The Blue Shield brand was developed at the start of last century with lumber and mining employers in the Pacific Northwest paying a monthly fee to a designated group of physicians.Blue Shield and the Blue Cross Association merged in 1982 to become the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware has been in operation for over 70 years as part of CareFirst, Inc. but in 2006 disaffiliated to become an independent company. Today the company maintains its headquarters in Wilmington and has a total membership of over 375,000. Its provider network covers the entire state of Delaware with extended coverage into Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware operated as part of CareFirst, Inc. for six years but after long and careful consideration, BCBSDE agreed to separate and become an independent company in 2006. Since then the companies have cooperated towards an orderly transition while BCBSDE has begun the process of deciding what is in the best interests of the company.
Since then, BCBSDE has rethought its mission, which is to now provide “benefits solutions that enable our customers to access high quality, cost effective health services, and the knowledge and guidance necessary to improve their health and well-being.”
