Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama was created in 1936 in Birmingham. Originally employing six people, BCBSAL first offered hospital coverage for $9 per year. Over the years, BCBSAL grew modestly and by 1948, it had swelled to nearly 100and in 1978 almost 1400 employees called the company home. In 1970, the company changed its name to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.

In 1990, the company first established its corporate values and three years later developed and introduced a Primary Care Network, Dental PPO, and Preferred Pharmacy Network. In 1996 and again in 2003, BCBSAL was named by a leading consumer magazine as the “Number one PPO in the country.” Two years later the company introduces Blue Advantageand in 2006, BlueRx, a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan is introduced.

In 2009, the company received the 2008 Brand Excellence Award meaning it has won the award all 14 years it has been given.

Current Organization
BCBSAL, along with its two affiliates, Cahaba Government Benefit Administrators and Cahaba Safeguard Administrators, employs nearly 4000. Maintaining offices in four states, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Iowa, BCBSAL’s corporate headquarters can be found in Birmingham with service centers in Montgomery, Mobile, and Huntsville, as well as satellite office throughout the state.
