AVOID THEM. LIKE THE PLAGUE. If you have plague, you'll still want to avoid them, because odds are they'll argue with you about it endlessly and hope you die before your claim gets done. I had catastrophic with them for 10 years, never cost them a cent. Overnight they triple my rates, never bother to call. Yes, they sent a letter, but it looks exactly like every other age-step increase letter. So I didn't read it. I called them up as soon as I realized the situation and asked if they would like to refund the increase out of a sense of decency to a long-time customer whose given them $10000+ and never claimed a cent. Well guess what, they don't have any sense of decency. They don't give a rip about their reputation (its already terrible, as you will see if you compare reviews). Insurance companies with this general strategy deny claims. They contest treatments in contravention of their contract, and make you go to court sick or dying if you want to get them to pay. Its a *deliberate* strategy with your more scummy insurance companies, and these guys definitely qualify as scum. I strongly suggest you look elsewhere.
Waiting and Waiting
A wind storm that blew through my neighborhood damaged the roof of my home. A lot of the shingles were missing and a metal frame that goes around the house fell off. Rain entered the house and caused mold to start growing. I filed a claim with Assurant. we are all living in the house getting sick because we don't have the money to move elsewhere and Assurant is taking their time making a decision as to what they'll be willing to help pay for.
Inconsistent Hurricane Coverage
Did you know that weather you want it or not, you will be charged about $15/month for hurricane insurance on your vehicle even if it is owned outright by you. However, if you own your home outright you are not required to do so.
I put up with Assurant for 1 year. During this time, I had a couple of dental claims and 1 visit to the ob-gyn. Not one claim was settled easily. Each time a claim was filed for things that were covered, Assurant would send a letter to my doctor/dentist and say that I was not covered. They even told the doctor that I only had life/car insurance with them. I didn't have either of these! I only had health insurance.
Poor Customer Service
They offered me maternity rider and my agent persuaded me to take this insurance. They did not mention specifically what they cover and what they do not cover under maternity. The insurance that I have has a very high medical deductible and equally high separate maternity deductible. When I started seeing OB doctor after I became pregnant, Assurant started to divide my claims between medical and maternity at their discretion and since nothing is defined in their contract their word seems final. It is now clear to me that I will have to pay for all of the pregnancy and my biggest worry is they will decline major charges by simply saying that they do not cover for it. Right now I am paying for a high monthly premium and all the bills since I am not meeting any of the deductibles. The customer service is terrible. They are very brief and do not give any explanation.
