History
Anthem Blue Cross of California has been around for over seventy years. The company is part of a proud tradition that dates back to the 1920s when The Blue Cross brand originated at Baylor University with a plan offering teachers three weeks of hospital care for $6 per year. As the company grew, it began offering coverage to other employee groups in Dallas and later expanded to national coverage. The Blue Shield brand was developed at the start of last century with lumber and mining employers in the Pacific Northwest paying a monthly fee to a designated group of physicians.Blue Shield and the Blue Cross Association merged in 1982 to become the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

Anthem formed as a spin-off of American General Insurance in the eighties. It went on to become a publicly-traded company in 2001 and three years later, it finished merging with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Late that same year, it merged with and changed its name to WellPoint. While Anthem is no longer officially a company, WellPoint still uses the Anthem Blue Cross name in eleven states.

Anthem Blue Cross of California originally formed in 1927 and has grown by leaps and bounds to encompass a network of over 8-million members, 330 hospitals, over 52,000 physicians and specialists, while allowing national access through the BlueCard program.

Current Organization
Companies throughout the Golden State entrust Anthem Blue Cross of California for insuring their employees. Small companies and individuals can join the 1.6 million Blue Cross members that form the company’s Individual and Small Group Division. The Large Group Division covers 4.1 million members within companies ranging from 51 employees to 2,000 plus employees.

Anthem Blue Cross of California divides the Large Group Division into key, major and special accounts to provide better access to groups of different sizes. This latter group spans over educational, government and other services that require massive resources to maintain on a daily basis.

The 5.7 million employees and individuals employed under the Small and Large Group divisions have allowed Wellpoint, Anthem Blue Cross of California’s parent company, to expand beyond the state with a similar level of service.

High Premiums, LOW Benefits

Please don\'t refer to Anthem BC as an insurer. They simply collect premiums and offer no benefits which is not my definition of an insurer. My Silver plan has failed to provide me any benefits in my first 3 attempts to submit claims. The only drug that works for me is not covered at all, my urologist IS IN THEIR ONLINE PROVIDER LIST but when I presented the card, it was not accepted, so no coverage. Needed an emergency clinic today and found that NONE of the ones within 50 miles of me are contracted so no coverage. $1.4k per month for 2 of us yet no benefits. Not what I expected of a SILVER plan.

High Pharmacy Deductible

I am finding out they put a $3000 deductible on pharmacy, this is a crazy amount for normal people who do not use the pharmacy a lot. We pay all this money every month and they raise the deductible so high it's just not worth it.

Silly Primary Care Rules

When I was sick, the doctor said that I could not get a same day appointment because I did not previously have a check-up with the doctor. I call the doctor only when I am sick and need relief. Ultimately, they would not see me, so I choose urgent care.

Rejected An Old Male Smoker

My father, a hard working immigrant, was rejected from this insurance company. The only reason why my father was rejected was because he was classified as a "smoker" and over 50.

Dropped When I Got Cancer

BCBS has terrible customer service. If your doctor prescribes you a medication and writes that down, they want you to take another one - the cheapest available. If you get cancer, they will drop you immediately. They will also keep on increasing the premiums all the time.

Terrible experience

The out of pockets expenses (co-payments, deductibles, etc.) is way more than my old insurance company. I am very surprised to learn that preventive procedures are not covered by a general physical and are subjected to the deductible. My worst experience of dealing with Blue Cross is getting information through their online or telephone customer service. Their provider directory is useless; it has not updated; I had to waste days after days calling doctors that do not exist or not belonging to their network. Furthermore when I called to get information through live agents I came across very rude and unhelpful people who end up putting me on hold and never getting back to me.

Will Not Pay Outside Emergency Care

I was in the hospital for leg infection. It was considered an emergency. Because it was outside my service area of the hospital service in California, they would not pay it. I was in no condition to be moved to my area 60 miles away. It took them almost a year.t pay all of the doctors.

Little Coverage

When we have to go to the doctor I end up getting a bill for more than what Blue Cross ends up paying. How does that work when I'm paying hundreds each month?
