Poor Customer Service
My car was hit by one of their insured. The adjuster was rude and condescending. The supervisor backed him up. I will be cancelling our life insurance policies with them after this incident.
I was recently involved in an accident with an AmFam customer who was totally responsible for the accident. After their "investigation", the AmFam adjuster said in his (subjective) opinion, I was 80% responsible and therefore they would not pay damages. I understand from my agent that this is a common practice of AmFam.
I'm sure their cost/coverage is comparable to other insurance companies. Their claims and customer service has been awesome. I have been involved in two accidents, the second one very recently and the process has been very smooth. They get me in touch with the repair centers, get my car looked at, stay in constant contact, and make sure I understand what my next steps are.
Customer Service Is NOT A Priority
I have been a customer of American Family Insurance for 24 years, but that doesn't seem to matter. Ithave been three months and my claim has Your agent is not your advocate, but another hurdle.
Dropping Me After I Was Robbed
I was robbed and AMFAM said if I filed a claim I would be dropped the following month from my homeowners insurance because that would be 3 claims in 5 years. I was also told I didn't need to think about getting a different insurance company because my claims would follow me. I lost $14,000 in equipment in the robbery and thought I had ONE claim against me. I was informed claim #2 was filed by another insurance co. This moron had been paid without me being notified that his insurance filed the claim. I thought since I didn't hear from him again he realized he was at fault and wouldn't win in court and dropped it. I had all the proof (witnesses) to fight him if he perused it but never had the opportunity. Instead I find out 3 years later I paid for his mistake!! Then last year they almost doubled my insurance because my credit score dropped after I lost my job and we were living on one income. I always make sure they are paid every month on time (It's a stiff fine if caught driving without insurance) and this is the thanks I get!
Slow Claim Processing
I have been waiting for more than 3 years to see if they are going to pay. They will happily take your money though. My agent was good, but unfortunately the company is not.
One of American Family's customer's rear ended my car. The adjuster was rude and did not want to help in any way to resolve the claim. She kept telling me she had to get a hold of the owner of the car before she could proceed with the claim. This took 12 days! In the meantime I was told there was "nothing they could do" and that "by law there is no time frame the customer has in which to report the claim". I even talked to her manager and he was just as uncooperative. I know they do not want to pay out on a claim, but to drag it out even when there was a police report so that they can claim they did their due diligence is unacceptable. They should be ashamed of how they treat potential clients.
We had some hail and the adjuster was sent out. He low balled us on our claims. Being that we don't work at a body shop, we didn't know how low he was. A lady later called us from AmFarm and asked if we were happy with the service on our claims and we said we thought he was low. She said get a quote from the body shop and they would make it right. We washed all three vehicles and then one by one brought them to the body shop. Sure enough the adjuster was $1,000 low on all the claims even with our deductibles. We submitted the quotes from the shop. They ended up being turned over to the same adjuster who low-balled us in the first place and he said the quotes were just an opinion. He said I could take it to 100 different shops and they would give me 100 different opinions.
Random Changes In Coverage
American Family said we were covered for an overnight stay when we lost our power last year and paid. This year it was for a week when the storms went through Antioch, Illinois. Now they say we are not and will not pay. They now say they shouldn't have paid the first time. Our agent said we were covered as well.
So Many Excuses
We were never able to use them for a claim. There was always a catch. We have found same coverage for 3 cars and home for less than half what they were charging. Now we're having problems receiving refund of amount owed to us since cancelling. There is always an excuse for everything.
