Everything is Denied
They have denied radiological services for a stress test and denied anesthesia for a surgery. I guess that I was supposed to have surgery without it. They also denied physical therapy following surgery. It didn't seem to matter that I could not use my arm.
Despite using an in-network-provider, Aetna refused to negotiate a reasonable discount. The bill without insurance was $5,500. The bill with insurance and an in-network-provider was $5500.
Aetna has very poor customer service. Their website sucks too. They keep refusing my request to see a specialist.
Poor Customer Service
I can't believe the substandard customer service Aetna's people deliver. After being ill for an extended period of time and running up quite a few expensive doctor bills, I got several notices in the mail that my bills weren't being approved by Aetna. I couldn't understand why the bills weren't covered because my policy clearly indicated that my doctor visits should have been covered. I had to place five, long, drawn-out, irritating phone calls to the company before I finally got the entire mess rectified. It seems that some computer error was responsible for the inappropriate denial of my claims. Why couldn't Aetna figure that out the first four times I called them? I spent so much time on the phone and aggravated, I am surprised I am not sick just from being so stressed out!
No Prescription Coverage
I just tried to pick up 5 prescriptions that I needed. The total cost: $500! I thought it had to be a mistake. I pay for a pretty decent PPO plan from them. I called Aetna SRC's help number and they assured me that there was no mistake. In fact they HAD given me a discount. A discount of $40! I pay you over $150 a month.
After paying all the bills for my surgery, I got another bill in the mail from the hospital. All my 'Explanations of Benefits' matched and yet another large bill arrived that they wanted paid in 10 days. I called Aetna three times before someone would call the hospital. After they talked to the hospital, Aetna decided that they had overpaid and seemed grateful that the hospital caught the error. So guess who gets stuck with the bill?
They failed to pay various doctor visit bills, lab tests, etc. My husband got so sick of calling them. He probably spent 20 hours on the phone with them over a few months. We're ending up paying the bills ourselves anyway.
I have filed two claims, one of which was only for $56 and they refused to pay either. The other claim was for only $80. Aetna paid out $13.92.
If you call Aetna to ask if they cover tests they will say yes, but when you have a routine test like a mammography they will then deny the claim.
Our plan clearly states that they are supposed to cover immunizations at 100%, yet they constantly come up with excuses for why they shouldn't have to pay.
