21st Century Insurance Story
The founder of 21st Century Insurance was Louis W.Foster, who founded the company in the year 1958, with the help of his experience of 20 years as an independent agent. An inter-insurance exchange is quite similar to a cooperative, where most of the policyholders try to insure the losses of the other policyholders. It was in the year 1968, a decision was made to convert the inter insurance exchange to the stock. It was the federal government who had minimized the tax for the advantages, and then the California Department of Insurance raised its capital and stock requirements. It was one of the most unique annals in the business of California. The profits that resulted on the use of this exchange were considered for measuring the amount of equity of the policy holders, where were entitled to the new company.$2 million were written on behalf of the company, in the year 1969, and $ 5 million was reached in the year 1972, and then $10 million in the year 1975.The company soon grew, and in a few years the company moved to Century City, in order to accommodate the ever increasing staff and number of policies. This was in the year 1980 that the company moved to its current headquarters, in Woodland hills. 21st Century Insurance has always seen its rapid growth, and expanded to many areas such as Arizonia, Washington, Georgia, Pennsylvania.Today the company is said to be employing more than 2500 employees and occupies a 11 storey headquarters building in Woodland Hills. The company also has 14 service offices, along with 9 drive in claim centers and 5 vehicle inspection centers.

1 Day Lapse In Coverage = $600

I failed to make my payment on time. I missed the late notice in the mail as well. I only got an email the day AFTER my policy was cancelled. When I called, they told me I owed them $7. I had to pay before they would consider reinstating my policy. I paid the $7 (plus $3 for their convenience fee). I was then informed that they couldn't reinstate my policy because my information "did not meet the guidelines". HUH? I was transferred to an agent to receive a new quote. I was informed my NEW policy would be $978 for 6 months. When I asked why my rate went up $600 they said "You had a lapse in coverage". SERIOUSLY? They expected me to pay $600 for being cancelled 1 full day? Needless to say I told them I wouldn't be doing business with them again.

Cheaper Policy and Good Service

I've never had a problem and the quote I was offered is almost 50% lesser than the other big companies. Customer service is great. I cannot comment on the claims since I never had one.

I started my policy at $580/6-months and a year and a half later the bill now stands at $855/6-mos. I'm a preferred (safe) driver. I have no claims and no violations. They twice claimed that the state allowed them to make these increases.

Everything I Expect

I have two cars and my home insured with them. In one collision accident where debris from a pickup truck cut my hood was inspected, they agreed to and paid within a matter of days. After a small fire in my home (about $10K) resulting from a defective aquarium pump, my claim was handled promptly and being reasonable. They paid me exactly what I submitted. In both cases, there was no increase in rates.

Huge Headache!

I signed up for a 6 month policy and paid in full. I got my car inspection done locally. After 6 weeks, I got a $500 check in the mail. I called and asked for an explanation. They had not received the inspection photos or report. Instead of calling me to inquire about them, they cancelled my coverage and sent me a refund check. I faxed them a copy of the inspection and sent the check back. A few days later I got a letter from the finance company stating that I didn't have full coverage on my car. I had to fax a latter to the finance company showing that my policy was paid in full. I wished their website and found out that I owed them almost $2,000 for some reason. I called for an explanation. They informed me that it was an error. A few days later I got a check in the mail for $35. When I checked my account online, I discovered that I owed them $45. Then I got another latter from my finance company stating that i didn't have coverage. I had to re-fax the proof that I did in fact have coverage.

don't Accept Post-Dated Checks

I mailed a check dated for the 20th of the month. They processed the check on the 16th. My bank honored it, but charged me $38.50! Apparently 21st Century does not accept post-dated checks. Being aware of such a policy would have been nice! They will not refund me the overdraft fee!

They make great promises only when you are about to sign up. Then they suddenly say one of your drivers has insurance points for a moving violations. We needed to go buy a drivers abstract to prove there were no points.
