A part of the recently enacted Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, HSAs are accounts that provide tax-favored treatment for current medical expenses as well as the ability to save for future medical expenses tax-free. HSAs can be obtained only in conjunction with a HSA-eligible health insurance plan. This is defined as a plan that has an annual deductible for individuals of at least $1,000 and for families of at least $2,000, and for which the sum of annual out-of-pocket expenses required to be paid under the plan does not exceed $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for families.
