Allstate Honored at White House Ceremony

Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao delivers keynote address

April 24, 2002 (NORTHBROOK, Ill.) In an exclusive White House ceremony, LATINA Style Magazine, a national magazine for the professional Hispanic working woman, is recognizing Allstate for its efforts in promoting and providing Latinas with the best professional opportunities in the workplace.

Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao will deliver the keynote address addressing the LATINA Style Top 50 companies. Also participating are Secretary of HUD Mel Martinez and 10 Senior Latina appointees in the President’s administration.

This is the fourth consecutive time that Allstate has been named to this prestigious list, which is one of the most respected evaluations of corporate America’s policies and practices as it pertains to Hispanic working women. More than 600 of the most respected corporations in the U.S. were evaluated for this recognition but only 50 were selected.

“We have a duty to keep Hispanic women informed about corporate America’s best employment practices,” says Robert E. Bard, President of LATINA Style Magazine. “We appreciate Secretary Chao’s recognition of the work we perform in our community. By the latest count, Hispanic women in the U.S. work force exceed 5 million, and the numbers continue to rise. We have gone to great lengths to evaluate these companies. Latinas can be confident that the LATINA Style 50 — 2001 represents the best corporate America has to offer to the Latina working woman.”

“Allstate has created a supportive and effective work environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” said Jessica Rivera, assistant field vice president, Allstate California Region and the highest-ranking Latina at Allstate. “Allstate leverages our differences to gain a competitive advantage. It is an essential business strategy that creates bottom-line results.”

Companies responding to LATINA Style’s survey were evaluated based on the issues LATINA Style readers identified as most important to them in the workplace. The principal areas of evaluation were: Number of Latina Executives, Mentoring Programs, Women on Board of Directors, Educational Opportunities, Dependent/Child Care Support, Leave for Childbirth, Alternative Work Policies, Benefits, Women’s Issues, and Hispanic Relations.
