The Indian Health Service (HIS) is the principle Indian health insurance provider and advocate for Native Americans. Its goal is to raise health awareness and status of Native American and Native Alaskans at designated hospitals and health centers across the country. There are also many urban health centers which further support and supplement these facilities with health and referral services.

The IHS was established in 1955 to help augment the relationship between the federal government and Indian tribes. The IHS provides health services to nearly 2-million American Indians and Alaska Natives belonging to over 550 federally recognized tribes in 35 states.
