Swinton Commercial is warning van drivers to ensure they take adequate rest breaks on long haul journeys to avoid unnecessary road accidents due to tiredness behind the wheel.
The UK van insurance retailer surveyed 1,200 online customers and found that 16% had momentarily nodded off behind the wheel in the past three years. Shockingly a massive 73% of van drivers admitted to not taking regular breaks, even though the recommended advice is to stop every two or three hours on a long journey.
Driving tired can increase the chance of an accident and costly van insurance claims, but more importantly, it can endanger the life of the driver and other road users.
Swinton Commercial is offering the following advice to van drivers to ensure they don’t drive tired:
— If you know you have a long haul journey, plan ahead so that you can factor in rest stops every two to three hours — Get a good night’s sleep before a long journey, or if you are driving during the night ensure you have a good days sleep — If you feel like you could nod off stop immediately and take a break — If possible avoid journeys between midnight and 6am as this is the time when natural alertness is at its lowest
Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton said, “Driving tired is very dangerous and can cause fatal accidents. It is really important that van drivers start putting these tips into practice.”
