Swinton Urges Customers to Consider Post-Christmas Cover

The post-Christmas blues, or indeed post-Christmas relief, can often take over one’s routine, particularly when thinking about your contents insurance.

With this in mind, Swinton Home Insurance is reminding people to check their policy, especially after receiving expensive Christmas presents as extra high value items received over the festive period could have pushed the overall value of their contents over their policy limits. Customers will need to re-assess the total value of their possessions to ensure the policy limits that apply are sufficient.

A survey of 1,200 customers by the leading house insurance retailer has revealed that 66% of people received Christmas presents worth GBP 250 or more, and of those, a worrying 71% are unaware of the possible impact owning these items could have on their insurance policy.

These statistics are put into perspective when you consider that the most popular Christmas presents of 2010 include 3D HD Televisions, iPads and expensive handbags, all of which should be included in your contents insurance policy.

Swinton Home Insurance urges those who were lucky enough to receive expensive presents over Christmas to make sure their existing policies cover their new household items, or amend their policy to cover the new items.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton said: “It is more important at this time of the year than ever to ensure your valuation of home contents is accurate. Most policies these days automatically increase the cover levels over the festive period to take account of Christmas presents but that extended cover is only temporary. By under-estimating the value of your contents, you are at risk of losing out in the event of a claim.”
