One in five van drivers would consider driving an electric van according to a survey by Swinton Commercial.
The van insurance retailer surveyed 1,200 online customers about their next purchase and 19% would consider purchasing an electric van to help the environment but only if the price was right.
This comes at a time when the Coalition Government is offering 25%, up to a maximum of GBP 25,000 off the purchase price of an electric van under their new scheme beginning in January 2011.
However, Swinton Commercial is warning van drivers to check the van insurance premium before they go ahead with the purchase. Electric vans are not yet widely available and have parts that can be difficult to replace, which can lead to an increase in repair costs and insurance premiums.
Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton said, “Although there are many benefits of driving a greener vehicle such as reduced carbon emissions and lower road tax, van drivers need to be aware that insurance premiums may be higher than driving a conventional vehicle. It is always a good idea to check a premium before a purchase is made.”
