Business travelers who park their cars at the airport several days a week. Families with an extra car they only drive occasionally. Drivers who avoid slamming on the brakes. They’re all less likely to be in an accident, so Progressive is offering these drivers a new way to save on car insurance.
With Progressive’s MyRate?’?® discount, customers could save on their car insurance based on how, how much, and when they drive. Under the newest version of MyRate, now available in Minnesota, customers could start saving on their car insurance after 30 days. In addition, Progressive now collects driving data for only six months to calculate a customer’s individual rate.
How it Works
After drivers sign up for MyRate, they plug a small device into their car that measures how they drive.
After 30 days, customers will find out if they’re eligible for a discount — up to 30 percent — based on their driving habits.
At the end of the six-month policy term, Progressive calculates the renewal discount and the customer returns the device to Progressive.
Progressive may periodically check in with MyRate customers to get a new snapshot of their driving.
MyRate is available to Minnesota drivers who buy policies directly from Progressive, or through its almost 1,400 independent agents in the state.
Drivers can log into their policy on progressive.com during the six-month period the device is plugged in to see how their driving habits are affecting their rate, and, if they choose, make behavioral changes that could lead to greater savings.
MyRate is voluntary, and drivers can opt out at anytime.
The MyRate device tracks how, how much and when customers drive their vehicle. It doesn’t have GPS, so it doesn’t track a vehicle’s location.
Progressive’s initial foray into usage-based insurance started in the 1990s with a pilot called Autograph.
Richard Hutchinson, Progressive’s general manager of usage-based insurance
“Minnesota is the first state where we’re introducing the latest version of MyRate. Now, drivers could save money after giving us a snapshot of just 30 days of driving.”
“MyRate is best for people who drive fewer miles than average, at low-risk times of day, and keep alert for others on the road. They keep a safe distance from other cars so they don’t have to slam on the brakes.”
