Stephen W. Lilienthal
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Steve is chairman and chief executive officer of CNA, the 7th largest U.S. commercial lines insurer and the 14th largest U.S. property and casualty insurer.Under Steve’s leadership, CNA has re-focused on its core strength in commercial insurance, re-underwritten its book of business, re-capitalized its financial base, rebuilt its operating platform, and focused on a set of core values – integrity, diversity, financial focus, customer focus, professionalism and teamwork.

Steve has served as chairman and CEO since 2002. Before joining CNA in 2001 as president & CEO, Property & Casualty Operations, Steve was executive vice president and head of the St. Paul Companies’ $4.1 billion U.S. insurance operations, which included the Commercial Lines Group and Global Specialty Practices. Steve’s prior experience included various executive positions at USF&G and Travelers. He began his insurance career in 1972.

Steve serves as a board member for a number of organizations, including CNA Financial Corporation, World Business Chicago, American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters/Insurance Institute of America, Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago, Northwestern Memorial Foundation, and The Executives’ Club of Chicago.

Steve holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation and a Bachelor’s degree from College of Holy Cross.

James R. Lewis
President and Chief Executive Officer

James Lewis is responsible for CNA’ $8.4 billion worldwide property and casualty business. Jim joined CNA in 2001 as executive vice president, U.S. Insurance Operations.

Previously, Jim was senior vice president, U.S. Field Operations at the St. Paul Companies. He spent nine years at St. Paul/USFG where he held the positions of regional president, Northeast Region; senior vice president, Personal Lines; and president, Small Commercial. He was with CIGNA in various marketing, underwriting and management positions for 17 years. He began his insurance career at Aetna Life and Casualty as a marine & fire underwriter.

Jim serves as a board member of BoardSource, Metropolitan Family Services, YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, and Children Home & Aid Society. He is a graduate of Berea College (Kentucky).

Janet Frank
Executive Vice President, North America Field Operations

Jan leads all North American field operations of CNA Property & Casualty Operations, including four U.S. regions and Canada. Her responsibilities also include all Risk Control operations.

Before joining CNA in September, 2001, Jan served as vice president of Underwriting, Financial and Actuarial, and Underwriting Services at the St. Paul Companies. She started her career with Reliance Insurance, later joining Chubb where she served in underwriting positions of increasing responsibility. She later worked as a business manager, product executive, and field vice president at Fireman’s Fund, followed by a regional president role in the St. Paul Companies.

Jan received her MBA from Daniels School of Business at the University of Denver. She completed the Advanced Executive Education Program at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania

Michael Fusco
Executive Vice President and Chief Actuary

As chief actuary, Mike is responsible for the professional leadership of CNA’s actuarial function. This includes property and casualty pricing and reserving, and support for other corporate functions.
Mike joined CNA in November 2000 from Insurance Services Office (ISO), where he was executive vice president. He also served as principal, Actuarial and Risk Management Consulting Practice, at Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young). He is a Fellow and past president of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and board member of RVI.

Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from City College of New York and a J.D. from the Fordham University School of Law.

John Golden
Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer

John has dual responsibility for CNA’s Information Technology and Worldwide Operations organizations. In this role, John leads CNA’s efforts to integrate technology and business processing into an efficient, flexible and scalable processing platform.

In conjunction with his leadership of IT and business processing strategy, John has responsibility for outsourcing, delivering application and infrastructure solutions, and ensuring that technology investments drive CNA’s profitability.

Under John’s leadership, CNA is moving forward on a companywide initiative — the Operating Platform Transformation — to build a more flexible, efficient business infrastructure. In addition, John has championed numerous improvements in billing, collections and other core business processes.

Before joining CNA in 2001, John was with Ameritech/SBC where he was responsible for delivering the company’s Customer Care and Billing capabilities for approximately 30 million customers across Ameritech’s regions.

John received his bachelor’s degree in management from Nova University. He also serves as chairman of the Technology Committee for Metropolitan Family Services of Chicago and is a member of the Technology Committee for The Executives’ Club of Chicago.

Jonathan D. Kantor
Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary

Jon is responsible for providing legal counsel about company operations, including insurance products and services, as well as legislative and regulatory matters. He also serves as corporate secretary of CNA Financial Corporation.
Before joining CNA in 1994 as group vice president and chief claims counsel, Jon worked at Shea & Gould, a New York City-based national law firm, where he was a partner in the Litigation Department.
Jon is a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of Corporate Counsel. He has a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and his J.D. from Columbia Law School.

Lori Komstadius
Executive Vice President, Human Resources

Lori is responsible for all human resources activities at CNA, including strategy and policy, organizational development and effectiveness, talent management, employee development and relations, and compensation and benefits.
Under Lori’s leadership, CNA’s HR organization has focused on partnering with business leaders to drive organizational change and strategic initiatives worldwide.

Before joining CNA in 2001, Lori was at the St. Paul Companies, where she held human resources leadership positions in the underwriting, claims, administrative services and corporate quality organizations. Previously, Lori held associate positions at A.T. Kearney, Inc. and Heidrick & Struggles, Inc.

Lori holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in organizational behavior and communications from Concordia College and completed the Human Resources Executive Program at the University of Michigan.

D. Craig Mense
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Craig has overall responsibility for CNA’s Corporate Finance Department, which provides asset and capital management, financial planning and analysis, investor relations, treasury services, corporate accounting, financial reporting, corporate tax, ceded reinsurance, financial regulation and internal audit services to the organization.

Prior to joining CNA in 2004, Craig was president and chief executive officer of Global Run-off Operations for St. Paul Travelers. Previously, he served in several leadership positions at Travelers Property & Casualty, including Chief Operating Officer, Gulf Insurance Group; Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, Personal Lines; and Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, Bond. He began his insurance career as a bond underwriter for Aetna.

Craig holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, history, from University of Virginia and a Master of Science degree, accounting, from Georgetown University. He is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).

Thomas Pontarelli
Executive Vice President and Chief Administration Officer

Tom is responsible for Life & Group Operations, Global Resource Managers, Corporate Real Estate, Corporate Communications, the Enterprise Procurement Group and Corporate Safety & Security.
Before joining CNA in January 1998, Tom was with Washington National Insurance Company and its parent, Washington National Corporation. He served in a variety of legal and executive capacities, including the positions of chairman, president and CEO of Washington National Insurance Company.

Tom is a Board member of Boys Hope/Girls Hope (Chicago) and Young Chicago Authors. Tom holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame and his J. D. from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.

Peter W. Wilson
Executive Vice President

Peter is responsible for CNA’s $3.2 billion specialty business, including medical and non-medical professional liability, directors & officers liability, errors & omissions, and warranty.

CNA is one of the largest U.S. providers of professional liability insurance and risk management services for medical and non-medical professionals and service firms.

Before joining CNA in 1992, Peter spent 10 years with AIG, managing its commercial Directors & Officers portfolio. He held positions of increasing responsibility in CNA’s specialty businesses before assuming his current position in March 2001.

Peter is a member and former president of the Board of Trustees, Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS). Peter is the current President of the PLUS Foundation. Peter received his bachelor’s degree, economics, at Syracuse University and attended the Advanced Executive Education Program at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.
