American Family receives national honor for reaching out to multicultural consumers

Madison, Wis. (July 29, 2002) – American Family Insurance has received a prestigious 2002 Excellence Award from the Corporate University Xchange for its development of strategic learning alliances.

“American Family has taken a visionary approach to extend educational opportunities to its employees and agents,” says Brenda Velez, senior research analyst for the Corporate University Xchange.

The 2002 Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Financial Times of London, recognize innovation and exceptional performance in corporate education. The Corporate University Xchange is a corporate education and consulting firm based in New York.

“Within our organization, we have committed considerable resources to continuing education – but we also have lots of demands. Learning alliances allow us to expand our reach,” says Nancy Johnson, vice president of education for American Family.

“When we can develop a relationship with an educational institution or company whose expertise and programs fit our needs, it’s a winning situation for everyone.”

Because American Family employees and agents work in 17 states, the company has developed alliances with educational and industrial partners throughout the country. American Family’s local educational partners include UW-Madison, Cardinal Stritch University, UW-Whitewater and UW-Superior.

In addition to classroom instruction that is offered at American Family facilities in the evenings, courses and degree programs are also made available online. Agents and employees who complete the coursework are eligible for tuition reimbursement from the company.

“One of the real barriers to continuing education is the aggravation of getting from the workplace to the classroom, which usually means driving across town or, in some instances, driving to another city,” Johnson says “By providing the instruction here at American Family, all our employees have to do is walk to another part of the building.”

Each year, the Corporate University Xchange invites corporations worldwide to enter submissions in one or more of five award categories. Entries are judged on effective use of best practices in corporate education, demonstration of the education unit’s role in attaining corporate goals and commitment to continuous learning.

This year’s recipients in other categories include Accenture, Booz Allen Hamilton, Infosys Technologies Ltd. of India and Barclays Bank of London.
