Aetna Foundation Awards $200,000 To Area Colleges and Universities

HARTFORD, Conn., December 3, 1996 — (NYSE: AET) The Aetna Foundation today donated approximately $200,000 to several colleges and universities in Connecticut and western Massachusetts as part of its national matching grant program to institutions of higher learning.

Area institutions receiving matching grants of $2,000 or more were: University of Connecticut Foundation, Connecticut College, Fairfield University, Hartford College for Women, Trinity College, Saint Joseph College, the University of Hartford, Wesleyan University, Yale, Hartford Graduate Center, Mount Holyoke College and the University of Massachusetts.

The total amount awarded by the Aetna Foundation this year nationally was $877,000, up from $855,000 in 1995. Since 1990, Aetna and Aetna employees have donated nearly $12 million to colleges and universities across the country. For the last seven years, the Aetna Foundation’s matching portion has averaged $900,000 annually.

Currently, Aetna’s program matches the gifts of employees, retirees, and other eligible individuals to colleges and universities only; however, beginning next year, the program will be expanded to include some secondary schools, public radio and television stations and other non-profit organizations.
