July 14--The Travelers Cos. removed a television commercial from Texas airwaves that suggested drivers could lose their homes if they got into a crash and didn't have sufficient liability insurance.

The property-casualty insurer complied with demands from both the Texas attorney general and the Texas Department of Insurance.

"As you requested, I write to confirm that Travelers has, effective immediately, permanently removed all television, multi-media, computer generated and/or radio versions of the above-referenced advertisement from the Texas market," Travelers General Counsel Kenneth F. Spence III said in a letter last Thursday to the attorney general.

The advertisement is misleading and conflicts with Texas homestead laws which protect a person's home from being seized in a variety of circumstances including liability related to a car crash, according Texas regulators. The attorney general and insurance department sent letters Thursday to the property-casualty insurer saying that if Travelers didn't comply by withdrawing the ad, it could be fined up to $20,000 each time the commercial airs.

The advertisement, "Driving Your House," also has been broadcast in Connecticut. It shows a man driving down a two-lane highway in a living room on wheels. He crashes the house-vehicle, and the voice-over says, "Without the right auto insurance, a crash might impact more than your car. Make sure you're properly covered, so when you're driving your car, you're not risking your house."
