Swinton Warn Drivers to Be Extra Vigilant in Foggy Conditions

Swinton, the UK’s leading car insurance retailer, is calling on drivers to take extra care over the next few days, as weather forecasters predict a continuation in misty and foggy conditions across the nation.

At this time of year, heavy fog and mist are likely to increasingly cause problems on the roads. Swinton is warning drivers to be particularly cautious and to alter their driving style to suit the conditions, especially when driving at peak times in the morning and evening rush hours.

A survey of 1,200 Swinton customers has revealed that 38% of people completely forget to turn on their fog lights, while 56% do not alter their driving style to take into account different weather conditions. In addition, recent statistics show that accidents caused by reduced visibility are 89% more likely to occur on UK roads than if the visibility is good.

Fog and mist can seriously impair visibility and cause danger on the roads if drivers do not modify their driver style accordingly.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton, says: “Extra care and attention is required when fog descends as accidents are more likely to occur under such conditions. Peak travelling times are the most dangerous time to drive in these conditions due to the stop and start nature of the journey. For these reasons, ensure you use your fog lights, keep your eyes on the road and drive with caution. This will reduce the risk of accidents and help keep motor insurance premiums low.”
