The median car insurance rate for women is approximately nine percent lower than the rate for men according to InsWeb (NASDAQ: INSW), a leading online insurance comparison provider.
The current national median rate for women is $698 for a six-month policy. For men, it’s $765.
Why do women pay less on average for car insurance than men? The answer may lie in the differences between the men and women that shop online for insurance, rather than the way insurers actually view the genders.
Based on an examination of male and female drivers who request insurance quotes at InsWeb.com, several differences are noteworthy, including:
— Women are almost 50 percent less likely than men to have a DUI/DWI on their driving record — Women are approximately 10 percent less likely to have a moving violation on their record — Women own vehicles with an average list price that is over 8 percent lower than the list price of vehicles owned by men ($22,815 vs. $24,861, respectively) — Women listed as the primary driver are less likely than men to purchase a car insurance policy with multiple drivers and/or multiple vehicles
“While the difference in the median rates for men and women is clear, we can’t say definitively that women pay less than men for car insurance because they’re women,” said Brad Cooper, InsWeb’s Senior Vice President of Operations. “Our data suggests there is very little rate variation when gender is the only difference between two drivers. The variance in the median rates is most likely due to differences in the underwriting profiles of our male and female consumers.”
