don't believe what they say.

i got insurance through United American Insurance in august of 07. i was told that if i ever had to have surgery that 100% of the cost would be covered. so when i had surgery in november, i felt like i was in good hands. little did i know that i was about to get screwed. they paid only 2k of the 11k bill saying that all of the things used during the sugery (meds, labs, sutures, IV, etc) were hospital expenses, not part of the surgery. that since the facility was charging for them, they did not fall under the "sugery" part of the plan. so after i was cut open apparently the surgery stopped and all the meds to keep me from coding and all of the sutures to close me back up were not really part of the surgery.

they negotiated the bill down 10%. i could have received 40% off for paying cash. and they refused to try to get a better price, they said i should call the hospital and try to negotiate. the total bill was $14,413 of which they paid $3770. i paid $2354 up front for the surgery and now am resonsible for the remaining $8289 ($10643 total plus $275 for 4 months {$1100}for a grand total of $11743). if i had paid cash i would have to pay $8648. this is hardly worth it. and everytime i speak with someone in claims, they are very, very rude. the guy i bought the policy from won't return my calls now. when he was selling it, he was all about call me with any problems. and when i tried to file the claim they said it was a pre-existing condition and were not paying anything! only after i called constantly to complain did they stop that investigation and start to pay. had i not done that i would be in even worse shape than i am now.

they sell you on an emergency that may happen. but remember this, they only pay for one procedure per diagnosis. so if you are in a car wreck and need more than one surgery or have more than one thing done at a time, they only pay for one thing.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY UNITED AMERICAN INSURANCE"!!!! it is not worth the money you pay.
