Nightmare on Oak St.

Recently had a kitchen fire, contained to the stove area. Burnt 3 cabinets, range hood, stove and smoke damage throughout the house. 2 MONTHS later, we are STILL waiting on final check!

The adjuster arrived promptly, but would not replace cabinets, only strip and replace damaged ones--(we flipped out!--If you know anything about wood, varnish yellows over the years and they would never match). He then agreed to stripping/re-varnishing all of them. Tried to say the stove could just be CLEANED (It had been in flames, earlier) finally agreed to replace it.

We were out of our home for two weeks while it was being professionally cleaned. We had to pay money upfront for hotel stays, after one week was finally given a SMALL check (after we HOUNDED them on the phone for it!) that supposedly would cover 2 weeks of hotel stays plus food. What a JOKE! It was so small, we ended up staying with my parents to save some money.

6 weeks later, we STILL had not been paid for structure damage, after several phone calls, FINALLY received a PARTIAL check to cover. (My husband ended up doing most of the work because we had not received a check yet). They held back nearly $500. Was told later, that he had to submit receipts for the work before we could get the rest of the structure damage check. (He did most of the work!) Guess they expect us to just say OK.

Now, a full 2 MONTHS afterwards, we are STILL waiting on the contents check! We have replacement value...or so they say. The professionally cleaning company had to throw away a ton of food and items from the kitchen and other rooms that could not be cleaned. THEY gave us a 6 page list of items to submit to insurance for replacement. I had to go find the prices on all the items (took 2 days on internet and in grocery store) going down item by item. I was only told to get prices and submit. They would look it over and unless there was a problem, they would send a check. STILL waiting 2 months later! I have been slowly replacing the items as we can afford to, but was never told to keep our receipts. After several phone calls, someone FINALLY responds and tells us she's sending out a check, but holding back $400 until she gets all our receipts for what we replaced. I've been buying things little by little for 2 months- and never told receipts were necessary. Now I will not get that money back.

2 months and nearly $1000 of OUR money held back, does not leave a good impression in this company. Checking into some things here.

DO NOT go with Met Life---unless you're rich and don't need any money!
