At age 59, I have had several health insurance policies including Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Healthcare. Kaiser Permanante is undoubted the worst policy I have ever carried. I switched out after less than one year.
The communications are frustrating as most transactions must occur online. The few phone numbers that they give out lead to endless phone menus that always end up in a voice mail box. Weather communicating online or via phone, answers can take days.
The doctors are clearly inferior to any other insurer I have worked with. Two doctors spoke English so poorly I could not understand them and one spoke so poorly even the assisting nurse could not understand him, and we had to ask him to write it out.
The KP pharmacy was yet another adventure. In one case a family member had a 60 day Rx filled with a 30 day supply and in another case a 30 day supply was filled 7 tablets short. I have never had this kind of problem with any other pharmacy.
Billing is a nightmare to waddle through compared to Blue Cross or United. There is nothing straight forward about it. You'll need a spread-sheet to track any co-pays or deductions you might have while you track through your overly complicated statements. KP also has more loop-holes for non-payment than any other policy I have had.
I switched to KP because a doctor friend of mine recommended it. After 5 months, I went screaming for the door and am now happily with another group. I would not recommend KP to anyone. They charge as much as other major providers, but the quality of service delivered was very inferior to any other policy I or any member of my family has ever seen.
