Berkshire Hathaway took on GEICO as a subsidiary in 1996. Warren Buffet, head of Berkshire Hathaway, has become one of the nation's most successful investors. Fortune Magazine has named Berkshire Hathaway's property-casualty insurance operation the most admired in the United States for two years in a row.
Since the founding of GEICO in 1936, the company has served the United States Military as best as possible with many special programs. Military customers can get special rates, discount options and more with GEICO insurance while serving the country during wartime and peacetime. These special rates routinely bring in more customers for GEICO.
GEICO offers more than just vehicle insurance. Motorcycle, boat, home, apartment and mobile home insurance can be purchased though the company, as can personal umbrella protection.
GEICO Advertising and the GEICO Mascots
GEICO does their advertising in a variety of ways, including print, radio ads and television parody advertisements. Their print ads are comprised mainly of mail circulars. GEICO's famous catch-phrase is "fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance".
Some of the first GEICO insurance ads were animated and were of people doing crazy and dangerous things, like pressing a button that would result in a cannon firing at them. "We all do stupid things. Paying too much for car insurance shouldn't be one of them," was then heard via a voice-over. These commercials were short, and were aired by showing two commercials back-to-back but with different parodies.
GEICO became even more popular with the introduction of their reptilian mascot. The GEICO gecko is a talking Day Gecko that was created by The Martin Agency and first appeared in 1999 during the popular Screen Actors Guild strike. The strike prevented the use of live actors, so the Gecko ad was born. The first commercial has the gecko pleading for people to stop calling him instead of GEICO, insinuating that they are mistaking gecko for GEICO. Kelsey Grammar was the first to do the voice for the gecko. Steve Bassett, a creative director for the Martin Agency, says that in following ads they changed the voice so that the GEICO gecko had an unexpected Cockney accent. Again, the accent changed to sound more like a working-class person in an effort to make people feel closer to him while also "humanizing" him. Basset states that, "As computer animation got better and as we got to know the character better, we did a few things. We wanted to make him a little more guy-next-door. And he looks a lot more real than he's looked before".
GEICO continued to offer a variety of commercials and ads. One very popular theme revolved around misdirection. The public will be watching what they think is a commercial for a totally different product, and then suddenly it changes into what is actually a GEICO commercial. Energizer is another company famous for using misdirection in its ads. Fictional characters have been used, such as Speed Racer and Bill Duchess. Real people, such as Tony Little, have also appeared in GEICO commercials. Other commercials have been of a hair loss doctor who switched to GEICO and saved money, a show about a fish, and a fictional soap opera based on a couple breaking up with one another. A set of GEICO ads was also produced that involved a fake reality show named "Tiny House". In this show, "contestants" are forced to live in a half-scale house.
Parody ads became popular in the promotion of GEICO insurance. Fictional products such as tomato soda, long distance phone service, fast-food, and a reality television show were shown with the end slogan of "but it won't save you any money on car insurance." The commercial would then end with "Why haven't you called GEICO?" The Energizer Bunny first used fictional characters in their commercials starting in the late '80s, and GEICO's commercials are reminiscent of those.
Other ads would start with a character breaking some sort of bad news to someone else - for example, a pitcher being relieved by his baseball manager. They then offer the fact that they have good news, explaining that "I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO!" The kicker of the commercial is that that news really doesn't help the other person. Some parodies included celebrities such as actor Sebastian Siegel. He played in one of the most watched "I've got good news" ads, a fictional soap opera parody for GEICO insurance.
Another GEICO commercial series features actor Jerry Lambert playing a stereotypical boring insurance agent. One commercial shows him reading to kids, who are sitting there looking bored, from a book of insurance fairy tales. Another one shows him reading an e-mail from a viewer who says it would be "the bomb," meaning it would be great, if the Gecko would dance the "The Robot." You then see the Gecko doing a graceful and smooth dance to a song called "Sweet World" by the band Comega Men. Afterwards, the camera cuts back to the insurance man trying to do the same dance, but with very stiff and awkward movements.
Many celebrities have been featured in the GEICO ads that have been aired over the years. Charo, Charlton Heston, Burt Bacharach, Little Richard, Don LaFontaine, Peter Graves, and Verne Troyer are some of those who talk about their GEICO stories and experiences.
The commercials then switched over to the Caveman Series. One of the first ones appeared to be a talking heads news interview, but instead were the cavemen. This series became increasingly popular over time, and it was also created by the Martin Agency. These ads feature Neanderthal-like cavemen in a modern day setting. The ad or commercial has the tagline "GEICO: So easy a caveman could do it," and then shows the cavemen being upset that they are still stereotyped as stupid and backwards. These ads show the cavemen as being active members of modern society, being smart and cultured among their peers. These GEICO commercials show them in various settings of everyday living, such as eating out, arriving at exclusive parties and seeing their therapists. The cavemen are seen as being a normal part of today's society yet still being stereotyped as dumb and backwards, and this is where the ads' humor lies. The cavemen try to defend themselves, unsuccessfully, and get increasingly annoyed.
These new GEICO ads became so popular a series of interactive websites were then created. GEICO's in-house creative team at Caveman's Crib wrote and produced the successful series. Subsequently, a TV series entitled Cavemen was born, and debuted on ABC Television in the fall of 2007.
That same year, GEICO started its own social networking website. My Great Rides was created specifically for motorcycle owners and was developed as a place to share stories, pictures and comments on bikes and lives. My Great Rides has proven to be another successful endeavor by GEICO.
GEICO insurance sponsors a car in the NASCAR Busch Series, Number 7. Number 7 is driven by Mike Wallace. A commercial was developed that shows a race team and a young boy who says he is a relative of Mike Wallace and that he is a better driver than Mike Wallace. In the commercial, the boy says, "When people see Mike Wallace and the GEICO Number 7 doing well, they'll think of saving a bunch of money on car insurance. But when they see me, they'll say, "There goes Lauren Wallace; the greatest thing to ever climb into a racecar."
These NASCAR commercials are produced in different format. One such format is an interview. An unseen narrator talks to the eager go-kart driver, saying, "What do you think of Mike Wallace?" The child answers, "Whatever, he's out there selling car insurance; I'm out there to win." The narrator then asks about the child's relation to Mike Wallace, to which he replies, "I didn't say I wouldn't go fishing with the man, all I'm saying is if he comes near me, I'll put him in the wall." The narrator responds to this remark with his own quip," You don't race in the Busch Series." The boy then answers, "Listen, go-kart track, grocery store, those remote controlled boats; when it comes to Mike Wallace the story ends with me putting him in the wall."
There are newer ads to this NASCAR GEICO insurance series where the boy refers to himself as "100 miles away and ready to strike," and also as "lightning in a bottle".
The ever-popular website YouTube also features GEICO ads. These videos show acts that seem to have no bearing on buying car insurance, such as a hallway mattress fight or a strange collection of expressions muttered by a webcam user (YouTube's Brandon Hardesty). An announcer narrates again in the background of these ads, telling the audience that "There may be better ways to spend 15 minutes online." This implies that instead of watching dumb videos, you could be getting a quote from GEICO insurance. These videos are similar to the "Stupid Things" advertisements. They are also aired back-to-back in sets of two.
TRS, which is the show The Real Scoop, was previewed in September of 2007.This series of ads was related to an E! True Hollywood Story-type show about fictional TV characters that were famous, such as Fred Flintstone, Cabbage Patch Kids and Jed Clampett. These characters claimed to be insured thru GEICO, featuring pretend interviews by pretend investigators.
GEICO Competition
There are many other insurance companies out there who are in competition with GEICO insurance. These major competitors include, but are not limited to, Allstate, Nationwide, Progressive, State Farm and USAA. Progressive can be aggressive in their advertisements, and many of GEICO's ads counter Progressive's claims of being able to quote their rates and several of their competitors' rates on their website.
GEICO History
Leo and Lillian Goodwin took a risk in the mid-1930's to create their company. While the Great Depression roared on, and thousands of people were struggling to survive, they founded one of the most respected and successful companies of their time. GEICO stands for Government Employees Insurance Company. Leo Goodwin began the company while he resided in Texas. His plan was to market his insurance to specific consumer groups, with the goal to keep his company's costs low. That way he could pass his savings on to his customers while still earning a profit. Goodwin was successful and GEICO started to become a popular company. In 1936, Goodwin opened a GEICO operation in Washington, D.C.
As an established bookkeeper, Lillian Goodwin worked side by side with her husband to start his company and became an active figure early on. She took care of all the company's accounting tasks as well as helping to underwrite policies, set insurance rates, issue policies to customers and advertise GEICO premium rates to target customers. Federal employees and top noncommissioned Military officers were the main targeted groups. The staff of GEICO totaled 12 people in 1936, although there were already 3,700 policies in force.
A family friend of the Goodwin's joined the company in 1948. Lorimar Davidson was an investment banker who joined GEICO insurance and helped the Goodwins find new investors when the original ones decided to move on to new opportunities. A new investor in the company was Benjamin Graham, who was a business professor at Columbia University in New York. He had Warren Buffett in his class at one point. In 1951 Buffett became part of the GEICO family.
The story goes that in the year of 1951 Buffett took a train ride to the state of Washington on a Saturday to learn about the GEICO Company. Unfortunately for him, the office was closed. But a working janitor directed him on where to find Davidson, who took it upon himself to describe the company and all of its advantages. From that one meeting, Buffett learned enough to make his first purchase of GEICO stock.
Davidson became Goodwin's successor when he officially retired in the year 1958. GEICO's new headquarters opened in Chevy Chase, Maryland, in 1959. Davidson became president of this particular branch while GEICO insurnace continued on successfully into its third decade of business.
As the '60's rolled on, GEICO insurance became more and more successful, fulfilling policyholders' needs left and right. In 1964, they passed the one million policyholder mark, and in 1965 insurance premiums reached a grand total of $150 million. In 1966, net earnings doubled to $13 million. GEICO started opening numerous sales and service offices to meet the needs of walk-in customers. Their very first drive-in claims office made its appearance in 1965.
The first half of the 1970s was a rough time for GEICO insurance. As the Goodwin's were in the midst of their retirement, Lillian died in 1970. The following year brought Leo Goodwin's death. As aggressive expansion of other insurance companies started becoming an issue in the mid-70's, loss reserves at GEICO started showing. The company went thru a difficult time for awhile.
GEICO pressed on even during those rough years. They continued to strengthen their underwriting and other company policies to keep up with their reputation as a fiscally sound corporation. In 1976, Warren Buffett purchased a second share of GEICO stock, reported to total 1 million shares in all. A chief investment officer joined the GEICO family in 1979. This was Lou Simpson.
In the 1980s prudent underwriting went on, and the expansion of the GEICO insurance company was slow but steady. 24-hour, 7 day a week and 365 days a year telephone service was introduced for claims, sales and service in 1981. GEICO's intent with this new feature was to prove their incredible emphasis on customer service.
A new chairman was introduced in 1993. Olza "Tony" Nicely became chairman, president and CEO of GEICO. He helped work to enlarge the customer base through a new and improved four-company plan. Increased advertising budgets also helped GEICO become better known and recognized throughout the nation.
Warren Buffett was impressed by the continuing success of this insurance company. So in 1995, his Berkshire Hathaway investment firm made a very large bid to obtain the remaining stock shares of GEICO. By 1996, GEICO was a subsidiary of a company that was one of the biggest and best in the nation.
Advertising became a very important aspect of GEICO insurance. Direct mail pieces were sent out and filled mailboxes around the country. Ads were seen everywhere, and the company's growth climbed even higher. The now-famous GEICO gecko was introduced in television ads in 2000 and has since been an advertising icon.
The International Insurance Society Hall of Fame inducted Leo Goodwin in 2001. Goodwin's ideas continue to help GEICO grow and develop even years after his passing.
2003 saw GEICO insurance surpass 5 million policyholders. Operations also opened in Tucson, Arizona, in December of that year. GEICO also opened a new center in Buffalo, New York, and company officials marked the opening with an official announcement.
As the Buffalo office was up and running thru 2004, another big announcement was made that summer. GEICO announced that they were reentering the New Jersey vehicle market. This made it into the local news, as well as the regional and national news. By December of 2004, GEICO had reached the 6 million mark in policyholders.
GEICO currently has over 21,500 associates of their company in 12 major locations around the country. They celebrate their success and their recent return to New Jersey. The founders of the company, Leo and Lillian Goodwin, would no doubt be very proud of the booming success that the company has become. The future of the company is still strong. Tony Nicely believes that as long as knowledgeable associates continue to be employed with the company, GEICO insurance will grow surely and steadily. He believes that GEICO's way of thinking can be summed up in three points: excellent coverage, low prices, and outstanding customer service.
More About GEICO
GEICO is a company based in the United States. GEICO is a personal lines automobile insurance company that stands for Government Employees Insurance Companies. The name may be a bit misleading as it was actually never a government agency. Instead, it was developed as a private firm originally thought up by the above-mentioned Leo and Lillian Goodwin to sell auto insurance straight to federal government employees and their families. GEICO assumed that these people would be more financially stable than the general public, therefore being less of a financial risk to their company. GEICO began to insure to the general public in the '70s after real-time access to driving records became available.
GEICO likes to deal with their policyholders more by telephone and via the Internet. This way it frees up capital that would have to be spent on employing agents throughout the field. However, GEICO does offer field agents and offices, mostly near military bases, and these agents are known as GFR's, or GEICO Field Representatives.
Currently, GEICO insurance provides coverage for 10 million vehicles owned by 7 million policyholders. They are a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.
GEICO's advertising strategy is known for its sheer volume and that it focuses mainly on their mascots, most notably the gecko and the cavemen. The gecko's accent was changed a few times, more recently to reflect on the working class, in an effort to "humanize" him and make him "more accessible and someone you enjoy listening to, some bloke you want to get to know." GEICO also used parody ads, featuring Japanese idol fan clubs, upcoming Saturday morning cartoons that were only fictional, and senator election campaign ads. The ending always goes, "But it won't save you money on car insurance!" After that slogan is heard, the commercial ends with "Why haven't you called GEICO?" GEICO is a headstrong company that has proved its worthiness in the amount of years it has been around and the millions of policyholders who are satisfied.

can save you 15% is B.S.
Since 2007 every 6 months my rates go up. It's either because of hurricanes (still paying to a fund), zip code, or a "high ratio of uninsured motorist in FL". My most favorite, "you lost your new car discount", but yet when I called back about a new rate for a new 2012, it went up another $19 and was told "well, sir, it's a new card", R U freakn kidding me?! I'm done with them, period! |

Agents rude and unethical
Avoid Geico like the plague. We had a claim, and they did everything ethical and unethical to try to get us to leave them alone. We were not at fault, and even when we sent copies of the law, they still wouldn't pay, and played games with us. We've been trying to send the same fax for 2 weeks because they keep claiming they didn't get it, and each time we call, they dump on us for trying to send them anything at all. |

Owner of body shopGEICO doesn't rate at all with me. I just spent all morning on the phone with an adjuster and his supervisor to try to convince them that GEICO needed to pay for the new parts that I ordered to repair a vehicle that was hit by their insured 15 days ago. Their requirements are junk yard and Taiwan parts even on liability claim!!!This old body man that's been doing fair and honest work for 30 years don't know anything?? Who's fixing this car? Geico is HORRIBLEI submitted a payment online and received a confirmation. Geico cancelled my policy so I called. I gave them the confirmation #. All they could say is that they could not find the confirmation, EVEN THOUGH I GAVE IT TO THEM! I had to restart the policy so I could drive home from work with no worries. Instead of the $99 that I usually pay, I had to pay $400 to restart and my premium jumped to $189. Geico is a rip-off and, believe me, I will definitely be looking for another company! |

Don't use Geico claim expressWe got suckered into using Geico Claim Express by their promises of a quick turn around on our auto repair and by their promise to stand by the work as long as we have the car. We were promised that our adjustor would oversee the work and keep us in the loop. Our car was first promised to us last Tuesday. When my wife hadn't heard anything, she contacted body shop who next promised Thursday, then Friday, then Monday, and now a whole week later and we still don't have our car. Called Geico to ask about a rental and they said that's between us and the body shop despite the fact that Geico made the assertion along with the body shop that we would have the car last Tuesday. |

Extremly poor customer service and communicationI received a past due notice threatening to cancel my insurance on October 11, 2011. Geico failed to provide me with any prior notice either by email or mail on the renewal of my policy which they issue every six months. In the two years I have been with Geico I have always paid my premiums in advance and take exception to their notice. In six months I will return to Amica, a company that I had been with for more than thirty years. |

Geico ..CROOKS!Geico can spend millions of dollars on advertising but will not honor any claims properly. A policy is a legal contract. Geico employees are taught to cut every claim down to nothing or find grounds to drop claims on illegal grounds. Geico feels that they can hide behind the corporate mentality of ripping off the consumer. I have close friends who work for Geico and they tell us stories about Geico's corporate policy that are just so unjust and illegal that one finds the information very disturbing. Geico will send out a rep to travel 400 miles to try and dispute a 500 dollar claim. They will not use new parts ..only knock off and inferior parts to repair the few claims they do fulfill. Just go online and research the lawsuits and consumer reviews and ratings for Geico. You will see that most of the customers of Geico are very angry at Geico for their illegal treatment. Gieco hires young ignorant college grads who ...well let's say can not find a job anywhere else...the lowest of the scum barrel. Do NOT do business with Geico...that I can tell you is the best advice! |

Pretty pleasedI had at accident not at fault, the other person had same Geico insurance, I didn't have any problems (it cost ~$4000). In the winter my windshield cracked from one side to another, I submitted the claim online and in 2 hours I got a phone call back from Geico, same day I got the windshield changed. I recently moved to FL, at DMV I was told I need Florida insurance and I called Geico, I could talk immediately with someone and I asked to send a fax with the insurance card saying Florida on it, I got the answer "Done" in seconds. My experiences were good so I'm shocked to see such a low rating from others. |

Bogus claimGEICO put a claim against my insurance for $600 for a claim by someone I don't even know. I never hit anyone, never gave my insurance information to anyone, never gave my name to anyone regarding any claim. When I asked why they did this, I was told that they were notified by another driver that I rear ended her. I think I would remember that! Have no idea who this woman was, they wouldn't give me her name, and I didn't even know it was on my insurance until I switched and the new insurance agent told me I had an "incident" on my record. I know this sounds absurd but I swear it happened. |

I'm still in so much pain, lawsuit didn't go well because of a bad lawyer. First off, I was in an accident.....the woman hit me. Without any real information and within 30 seconds of my initial call to them, they said it was my fault. I told them that I would like to fight it because of the circumstances, the man didn't even want to deal with it and rushed onto the next question. They set up my towing and the body shop to take it for repairs. Which by the way had an insurance adjustor with an office in it.....conflict of interest to me. I tried to contact the adjustor for 2 and a half weeks. Couldn't get her to return calls. Never answered the phone after about 3 pm in the afternoon. |

Stay away from Geico!I had a credit on my account from a misplaced payment. They sent me a refund check. Then I had a rate increase, found a new carrier. I ask the women on the line if I owed anything, she said no. I dated my new Allstate account based on that information. That was April 30th, 2011. Fast forward to May 31st 2011. I get a bill in the mail from Geico saying I owe $122.74. What? I am confused? Supposedly the refund check and the misleading information the rep told me ended up being wrong. Now I am a business owner and If I make a mistake I don't nail my customers for it. Got into a long debate with a Geico :supervisor: hoping he could clear the mess. He told me: sir I cannot do anything. We are sorry we gave you the wrong information but you still owe us! I said, "For what? You guys made the mistakes!" Needless to say he said I would go to collections if I didn't pay it. Ha- I have refereed so many clients to Geico and will NEVER, EVER, EVER do that again. DO NOT BUY GEICO IF YOU WANT THEM TO PAY CLAIMSI have been a loyal Geico customer for over 5 years. Recently I had an accident in which I was injured. I paid for $10000 worth of medical expenses on my policy but they maxed my payments to $3000. How am I responsible to pay my payments on time to keep my policy but when I need my policy I don't get what I pay for? This seems corrupt and unfair. I would not recommend Geico to anyone!!! American Family was my previous insurer, the only reason I did go with them is because they were more expensive. Geico Policy HolderThe customer service at Geico is terrible! We were accused of a hit and run accident and so we were frantic and called our insurance company thinking they would protect us! WRONG!!! Our agent Ramonica Kemp did not try to protect us in any way and in fact gave our information to the other party. We requested that she not pay this claim until all police reports and other investigations were complete! She did just the opposite and paid the clain. Ramonica Kemp would not tell us what the damages were or the cost of repair nor would she show us any pictures of the damaged car. Now that's customer service!! It only pays to lie and cheat about auto accidents because Geico has shown us that their own clients are not important. If this is the kind of company you want then Geico is for you, but for me I've already gotten a new company with higher rates thanks to Geico and I don't mind paying it because I am not with Geico any longer!! |

Geico refuses to refund me remaining balance
I used to own a car insured with Geico, and I sold my car in Jan 2011. when I called Geico to cancel my policy, and since they deducted the money in advance, they owed me a remaining balance. I have never received the check of the remaining balance until March 2011, they claimed that they sent it twice to an address that is different from the my address on file (I do not really know why would they do so ) so I asked them to send it again and confirmed the address to them. however, 2 weeks later, I purchased another car, so I called them to insure the new car, this time they asked me if I was married, (Fact: I am engaged and planning the wedding next June 2011) so I gave them my future wife's name, and was shocked that they added her to my insurance policy, a week later, I got the check of the remaining balance in both my name and my future wife's name on it. the bank refused to cash the check as it is not in my name alone. I tried to explain to Geico that my future wife has never been to the US, and she has no Social Security number, but they still insisted that they cannot send me a check in my name alone, they want her to send them a paper from overseas authorizing them to give me my money back. |

RetiredI became a GEICO customer while in the military in 1969 because GEICO offered me better rates for a soldier than any other insurance company at that time. Over the 40+ years I have submitted many claims and I've never had a problem with them being honored and processed. Their staff as well as their adjusters have always been friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. I really think they value customer service and loyalty. If either of those ever change, I will walk away in a heart beat because rates are very competitive. Today I am a satisfied customer and have been for over 40 years. |

Geico sucks, unreasonable rateThis company should go bankrupt, they spent so much money on advertisement and earn it back from draining the consumers' blood. I don't even know why there are people buying insurance from Geico, they have the worst rate ever, averagely 3 times more from the market price. My car was hit and totaled from a driver who's 100% at fault and he had Geico as their insurance, they inspected my car and gave me a unreasonable estimate, my car worth $12000 from Kelley Blue Book and Geico only tried to pay me 5000, and they didn't even pay me until 2 years later until I gave up and called, and I had to pay for the towing and storage. They suck! You must be stupid and dumb as hell if you're using Geico. Drop it asap. |

ZERO loyalty to customers.I had Geico for over 17yrs, never had a single claim. As a scientist, l had every discount available and the best driving record. I got a DUI (regular, not extreme), l received the cancellation notice prior to THE CALL. THE CALL was to inform me that my rate would increase from $89 a month to $500 a month and a $5000 deposit. Loyalty is not a term that this company knows, they are cheap, and that's what they are CHEAP. |

Awful!I have never in my life had such an awful experience with my auto ins. policy. I was hurt badly by another Geico driver who was 100% at fault according to Geico. Geico will deny most if not all your med.bills even if you are knocked unconscious, 2 a herniated discs, neurological issues from concussion and a herniated discs along w 2 bulging discs. So what if you have a high PIP policy, doesn't matter. A year later they are still denying medical payments even after they had their own IME DR's say I needed on-going treatment. yes, they are a little cheaper but if you have a crystal ball that says you will never have an accident in your life..than go for it. if you are smart, cough up a few extra bucks and save years of stress. |

NEVER AGAINI recently signed up for Geico insurance for my lease vehicle. When I applied they quoted me a price and gave me a policy. After 2 months I was out of work and was late with my monthly premium. They told me not to worry and I made the payment. A couple of days later I was informed by my lease holder that they had been notified by Geico that I only had liability coverage and nothing else. When I called customer service I was told that they had found a "past due" amount on a previous policy and until I paid them I could only get basic liability. This caused my lease holder to shut down my car until I had full coverage. This in turn cost me a job because I had no transportation. When I called the customer service rep and explained this to them they could care less. Then about 2 weeks later I received a letter from DMV saying that I had a lapse in my coverage and had to pay a $100.00 fine to reinstate my plates. Again Geico could care less. Needless to say I will NEVER use Geico again |

Beware of Geico - They'll get you in time!I've been with Geico for over seven years and have been very pleased. Recently, my wife was in a parking lot and when opening her door put a very small dent in another vehicle. The damage was so minimal it was almost undetectable on the dent ridden car she came in contact with. In December 2010 there was a mix up and Geico terminated our policy. I immediately called them and got the policy reinstated. To my surprise, my six month rate went up close to $250.00. The excuses given to me were so ridiculous I couldn't believe it. With Geico, loyalty doesn't matter to them. Their underwriters are from the depths of hell and don't care. Be ware of Geico. Just wait. In time you'll get ripped off. |

GEICO IS THE WORST INSURANCE EVER!!!!!GEICO SUCKS!!!!!GEICO SUCKS !!!!!SCREW GEICO
I recently had my vehicle vandalized right in front of my house a couple of days before Christmas 2010 that resulted in an estimated cost of damage of about $1500...After doing the normal procedures i.e. take pictures, make a police report, finally call to make claim....Because i had a small lapse between switching car insurances and the incident happened the following day after changing to Geico, A Geico representative reported that it raises a red flag...So i think OK that sounds legit after all this was such a coincidence that my vehicle got broken into the next day after transferring insurances. So i fax them the police report, made a recorded statement over the phone and explained the whole situation. About a week later a Geico Investigator comes to my home and records another statement which i still didn't mind doing, i show him the pictures of the vehicle of the day it was vandalized, i tell him that my fiance is a witness who lives with me and that also my neighbor had come home early in the morning around 2:30am the morning of the incident and noticed that my car was still fine which leaves me to believe that the incident took place between then and the time i seen my car vandalized 10:00am that same morning. Then he asks me if i would be willing to give up my phone records. Now i don't know about anybody else but for me that raises my red flag and even though i have nothing to worry about and I'm definitely not trying to pull any schemes, this investigator made me feel like i was the perpetrator. It's been a week and a half already and Geico has not done one thing to help me with my claim. I don't believe anyone should have to go through such hassle to get a claim. I will definitely be changing my insurance today. Any other insurance company will be better than Geico. Geico is the worst and i don't even consider them an insurance company. They seem like they are the ones who need to be investigated. Screw Geico..... |

Geico or ANY Insurance Company is not your friend
1. If you are in an accident and injured and you are not at fault, get a lawyer ASAP. DO NOT MAKE AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY, let your lawyer do it. It is the ONLY way you will get a fair settlement for your injury. Talking to a Personal Injury/Auto Accident lawyer for initial advice is FREE, check your Yellow Pages, there are TONS of them listed with ads. |

THEY ARE DROPPING PEOPLE LIKE FLIES!I have been insured with Geico since I bought my car in 2007. I had relocated from Europe so I had not had insurance in a long time and was shocked to begin with at the prices but later learnt that the prices were quite good. In 2007 I had a rental car and an at fault accident which I swear was due to an issue with the Scion's steering wheel (never had an at fault accident before). They raised my rates and still I stayed with them. I had several acts of vandalism perpetrated to my car and made claims as such. I also had to use their emergency roadside service twice. I had two non-at fault accidents, one due to construction and the other was a hit and run. Each renewal period my price raised slowly up though still was considered cheap for where I live. I was recently told that in August 2010 I would see a drop in my rate as my at fault premium would be dropped down. Funny enough they decided to review my policy and I just got a letter telling me that they no longer can insure me. Among reasons were the two non-at fault accidents and also vandalism claims which have ceased over two years ago when I moved into a gated community. I was also told that my use of the roadside service were factors (should legally not be according to the Florida Insurance Commission). That said I called and argued that they simply were doing this because I was scheduled for a price drop the same month they decide to cancel my policy. They did not care and now to get insurance elsewhere it will cost me almost as much per month as it did per six months with Geico. I am so angry and they are so sleazy! |

Geico cancelled policy with 20 day notice while on phone with them but didnt tell me
To make a long story short. I have to file an sr22 with my state due to an accident a couple of years back, Geico is one of the few insurance companies that do this. I have had insurance with them for a little over a year. My license was suspended because Geico failed to show proof of insurance on a specific date that I was pulled over and ticketed. I called Geico to get it straightened out and while on the phone with me they were canceling my policy but failed to tell me. The very next day I receive an email from Geico stating to log in to my account due to some policy changes. It said my policy had been canceled with an effective date 20 days out and to call a number to renew the policy. I called the number and was told they canceled my policy because my license was suspended and I had had 2 alcohol related tickets in the past 10 years. I told the lady that it was suspended because they failed to provide proof of insurance to the state which I even pay extra for. |

renewalI have been a customer of GEICO for over 20 years. I received a ticket for driving without a seat belt in December 2009. Prior to that my record was spotless. I looked at my renewal papers last week (6/2/10) and was shocked. I have 4 vehicles insured through GEICO, 3-full coverage and 1(Jeep)-liability only. I was paying about $900.00 every 6 months. My renewal papers left me stunned. My policy went up over 100% - $2300.00/6months. WOW!! I have called GEICO repeatedly and have yet to get a clear answer as to why. I am a government employee with a clean driving record. I have since called numerous insurance companies for a rate quote. All of the quotes I received were about a few hundred dollars from where i was from GEICO but nothing even remotely close the renewal. By the way I also had my home owners managed by GEICO. Sad to say but I am moving on. I was a loyal customer for over 20 years. |

We are most likely going to have to take them to court to get what they should be paying us. Steer clear! Hope none of their insureds run into you. . My personal experience with GeicoIn May, I purchased a new Mercedes BlueTech Diesel Suv. In April, I had my first "my-fault" fender bender. My car had about $4000 in damage to the front-end. Geico paid all but my deductible and a check was cut within a matter of a few days to the auto collision center. In September, this same car was stolen from a public garage while I was away on a weekend cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. All of the electronics were stripped and the chop shop cut the wiring cable on the car. Geico expeditiously opened a claim, paid the dealership and authorized over $16000 in repairs. For the first time as a driver, at the age of 40, I've experienced a bit of bad luck. I'm so glad that I had Geico as my insurance company. It's been a traumatic experience, having a car stolen, but my Geico adjuster has been with me every step of the way. |

I was rear-ended by Geico (SCREWED TWICE)I was rear-ended by a young man that is insured with Geico at a high speed (at least 25 mph) while I was at a complete stop. He said his brakes locked up then told the police that a car pulled out from in front of him and he didn't see the cars stopped ahead. Suspicious? I think so. I did not receive a value high enough to replace the car, not even to cover the damage. It would be totaled then I would be at an even higher loss if I tried to have it fixed. I am in a lot of pain and continuing treatments. I am very disappointed by the customer service as they rush me off of the phone when I have questions. Disappointed by how Geico handled the damages to my car. I will never have Geico. They are the third largest insurance company, I believe with over 7 million customers insured and over 12 million vehicles insured. Your rates go up when you have an accident but they don't want to pay for the damages to the car. You can't get a decent car for $1,000 that's fxxxxxx ridiculous. These millions of people are paying higher rates for Geico than they would at other companies and Geico won't take care of making sure customers are satisfied with their repairs, are able to find a decent car if the car is totaled, etc. It's complete bull and I am taking my claim as far as I possibly can. I was in no way at fault for the accident and I'm the one they are trying to screw. We pay for insurance to make sure our costs do not go up so why when we are involved in an accident do they screw us and cost us even more. Over $1,000 a year to pay for insurance and when my car worth about $2,000 is totaled I can't even get that much when I wasn't at fault. I don't want to think about what the out-of-pocket costs would be for me if it were my fault. |

I've been with GEICO for over 6 years now. I had my car and house insured. I had a car accident in June 2009. The other party hit my car from the back at the stop sign. I called the police to have a police report when the accident occurred. My back was hurting a bit and my neck injured. X-rays from the chiropractor confirm everything. I called GEICO within 3 days to state what happened in the accident. After they got my statement, I started to go to local chiropractor. GEICO agent assured me I will be reimbursed for the time off from work with my medical expenses (had doctor's note temporary not eligible for work). DID NOT HAPPENED!!! 30 days later I was informed that I was at fault of this accident cause first call didn't count and the statement I gave them wasn't valid. They said it was a wrong department I talked to, even though when I first called, I talked to customer representative stating I need to file a claim. |

When you finally got in touch with them they would tell you half truths and not indulge in any information that you really needed to know. I finally gave up on the adjuster and got in touch with her supervisor. He seemed to know less than she did and did not want to help either. My advice is to anyone that gets involved in an accident with a Geico customer is to consult an attorney ASAP you will be glad you did. |

Thank you GeicoBeing a long time Geico customer, I fortunately have never had to put their customer service department to the test. Apparently, a lot of people have had negative experiences with Geico and that kind of worries me in the event of being in an accident. But whatever else Geico does, good or bad, I give them kudos for pulling their sponsorship from the Glen Beck show. I am totally impressed with a company who stands up against the lunatic fringe. Way to go Geico. |

limited experienceI'm grateful to God that my vehicle and vehicle selection was a good one. I've had few problems and repairs. The one thing I've needed from Geico is towing. Over the nearly 25 years I've had my vehicle I've needed towing three times. In the last two towings the woman on the customer service end was a shit - a real shit. I can understand the occasional bad day but this person has a bad day 24/7/365 - WOW. Maybe she needs to take something for that monthly thing. |

Geico is great as long as you are not filing a claim!I submitted a medical payments (med pay) claim. Very simple. I even faxed them the accident report, records and bill from one doctor visit. (Keep in mind I pay an additional premium on my policy for medical payments coverage.) I have tried to get a turnaround date for my med pay claim. So far, 3 people have told me 3 different things and still no check. The 'customer care' people are rude and disrespectful. If Geico can't handle such a small and simple matter, no way will I trust them with my continued business. |

Geico refuses to pay claimRear ended by an uninsured drunk driver causing me to have multiple herniation in my back. Missed 2 months of work. Geico tells me they will not pay under the uninsured motorist provision and that I must bear the expense of a trial. Geico is the worst, if you have them you will get shafted. |

Complaints
As a consumer myself I think it is very important for people to expose the seedy underbelly of any operation that might cause harm to others. I for one have read each and every single complaint that folks have listed here. In the "majority" of cases I can tell you that most of the issues have to do with the individual not utilizing common sense and simply taking care of business in a responsible and common fashion. That being said I also know that employees of any company can and do make mistakes. I think that this website would be much better served if they would allow insurance companies to either contact and fix the problem to the customers satisfaction or be allowed to post an immediate rebuttle after a full investigation has been made. How can this website be useful when ALL the companies listed have low satisfaction ratings... All these companies do not have low satisfaction ratings in reality and so when a customer is looking for help they really are getting nonsense and may not go with the best company for their dollar after reading a small unrepresentative sampling of a very very few people. Geico is the 3RD LARGEST insurer in the US and has the best customer service and prices available with the best interactive website I have ever seen and is as generous as any other TOP QUALITY company from what I have seen too. I have a background in sales management and training with AAA, State Farm and now GEICO and I can tell you from personal experience that these three Companies are some of the VERY best around yet if you compare companies on this website you would not know it..... Folks USE COMMON SENSE and realize a blog of some folks who are not satisfied is not the way to figure out who to insure with.... Check out JD POWER AND ASSOCIATES who is a rating company along with AM BEST who is a financial stability rating company along with your own cost comparisons. Last but NOT LEAST inquire with your states very own Department of Insurance and investigate the "complaints" section "ONLINE". These are serious complaints that the state has looked into and found them to be actually "CREDIBLE". You will be able to find actual and factual statistics that can help you truly decide who you should be insured with based on how many credible complaints are filed and upheld by the state in comparision to the number of insureds within that given state. Translated this basically means that they figure out how many credible issues per 100000 insureds or whatever number that state uses for their statistics. This percentage is VERY telling so check it out. Get informed and do not be "misinformed" by someone who cannot see past perhaps there very own personal bias. We are all biased in some way as imperfect people especially when it affects us financially. Be informed properly, statistically and more importantly honestly. |

Even when the accident was the insurer fault and she got ticket for hit me at the back. I even talked to manager and they still refused to pay me for my car damaged. But now I have to go to Insurance Commissioner of State for help. I feel sorry for all the Geico customer and however also got hit from their insurer, because they will lied to you. |

fraudulent companyI got into an accident, which was not a result of my fault. This is the first and only accident so far I have ever had. I went on geico website, logged in and clicked on report n accident. It brought me to the "report a loss report". The first thing that says on top is "do not file this report if you ae not planning on claiming damages," which I was not planning to b/c I only had a small bump, which is lower then the deductible. I called Geico customer services to make sure I don't have to file or report anything. The person at Geico said I don't have to do anything but he didn't ask my name or insurance policy number, so they didn't recod the conversation and I didn't get his name. Later on I got the letter that I'm being sued and Geico refused coverage b/c I didn't properly and timely report an accident. This company will scue over any good, loyal customer. |

ClaimsI have been a long standing customer with no prior claims. I was involved in a car accident that was not my fault and had severe damage to my back. The person that hit me had no insurance. The claims adjusters were rude and ultimately denied my claim. I am left with over 30,000 in med bills to be paid by me and a herniated disk, gastritis from the injections. I would not recommend Geico to anyone. On top of that I have had to dispute the Clue reports in order to get insurance through a different company. |

Geico refuses to pay me the correct value of my new total lossed car!I leased my Prius in Jan 2009 and had an accident on March 2009. The car was brandnew and ended up in total loss due to the other driver. When I leased the car I had put down $2500 of initial payment. Today Geico is closing my lease with Toyota but subtracting my initial payment of $2500!! When I ask why the claim "specialist" said that this is the fair market value. How is it possible that the value of a Prius goes down $2500 in only 2 and half month???!! I may have to go with a litigation attorney and that pissed me off. I and my whole family (at least 10 members) will 100% leave Geico. |

In my case there was an issue with a check being issued to the wrong person. They have quite possibly the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Decent customer service, but don't be fooled thinking you're saving money!
I've been with GEICO for 9 years. That's a long time. I had never had an accident, and my husband had only a minor parking ticket, but out of curiosity, I shopped around in the early years of having GEICO, and found it was by far, the cheapest. |

Get real.People who write these reviews all share a common trait. They are unfamiliar with insurance and have no desire to have any knowledge about something that effects there lives so much. Of course an insurance company will treat a claim where the keys were used to steal a car and only vandalize it as potentially fraudulent claim. Also, the proper way for a third party to get any kind of liability payout is to sue the insured or the company that covers him. It's easier for dumb people to get on a website and complain than to look at themselves and the way they handle there lives. GEICO has excellent customer service and is rated as high as can be rated for claims services. If a customer has good credit and a good driving record there are almost no other companies that insure for less than we do. Trust in the gecko GEICO is an excellent company. |

GEICO is hard to deal with
My 2008 Ford Fusion was stolen and recovered by the police a week later all the inside was stripped or rip up. My keys were lifted out of my pocket so I had to get a ride home that night. The next day I when to pick up my car, and it was gone. Philly Police located after somebody call them about people breaking into my car again. I called Geico and have been dealing with Sandra Johnson. Johnson asked my for my phone records, statement friend contact number. Everything she asked for I gave her. The phone record I blacked my friends numbers the days before the car was stolen. Johnson called my house and left a message saying the phone records were not good and I was hiding something. Hold up Im the victim, my car was stolen, and why does GEICO want my phone record anyway. Its not in writing I know I asked her were it said phone records. So I called johnson and asked her why the phone record? she wont not say anything or tell me how the report was going. My car was stolen 10/10/2008 and it is 12/13/08 and still nothing. I have called and called but get the run around. Im a iraqi freedom Vet and dont need to get this type of bull. I have been paying for a stolen car that is sitting in GEICO lot and non driveble for 2 months now . WTF. Ill never go with GEICO again. Thank you Sandra johnson |

Agents and Claims Adjusters are lazy and lie.I have patiently and politely dealing with Geico on a claim where I rear ended a car on October 24, 2008. They have supposedly paid the other person for their damage but I'm beginning to wonder since they have been stringing me along since the accident date. The adjuster told me what I should receive on my totaled car. I have sent him a copy of the paperwork he requested. For the last five weeks he has lied to me about sending the paperwork for me to sign off on. I've call his supervisor who didn't bother to return my phone call. The liability agent is a joke; she just blames it back to the adjuster. I called the main Geico number wanting to complain to someone with authority. After talking to this person for ten minutes and giving all my info, she tells me all she can do is refer me back to the liability agent. I had had no problems with Geico before either but it only because they didn't have to do any work for me. Luckily my policy will be up soon. I will leave them, not the other way around. |
