Cigna either doesn't pay claims or pays them inadequately. They make you jump through a million hoops before they finally do what they are supposed to do. And if you send in forms proving that your kids are students so that coverage won't be dropped, be sure to send it certified mail. They'll claim they never got it over and over until you can prove it. In the meantime, your college kids have no medical coverage and are having to pay for their care and file claims for reimbursement later.
Their website lists providers and even if you get a referral and use one of their providers, they'll send you a denial because you used "an out-of-network physician." And the latest fiasco, my daughter is diabetic and wears an insulin pump. Her pump is over 5 years old and starting to cause problems, so the pump manufacturer advised me to check with Cigna because our plan provides for a new pump after 5 years. Cigna says it's covered and refers me to some middle man provider (Gentiva CareCentrix) who tells me that my "durable medical deductible is satisfied" and Cigna will pay at 100%. I ordered the new pump and am now being dunned for payment because Cigna and Gentiva both MYSTERIOUSLY have no record of ever telling me it was covered at 100%. A RUDE creditor from NCO called today and threatened me for thousands of dollars that I do not owe. Cigna says they paid "according to the plan benefits" and their cronies at Gentiva have no record of my call on 4/29 getting their approval, so they've unleashed these collectors on me. I was misinformed and would never have purchased this expensive pump if her old one could be fixed. Since they approved it, I got the pump and am now being harassed by collectors for Gentiva. I am sitting here in tears after spending hours on the phone with these abusive jerks. Around our household we not-so-affectionately refer to Cigna as my other full-time job. They are either dishonest or inept, and their fax machines must work like paper shredders!
