The Blue Cross brand originated in 1929 at Baylor University with a plan offering teachers three weeks of hospital care for $6 per year. As the company grew, it began offering coverage to other employee groups in Dallas and later expanded to national coverage. The Blue Shield brand was developed at the start of last century with lumber and mining employers in the Pacific Northwest paying a monthly fee to a designated group of physicians.Blue Shield and the Blue Cross Associationmerged in 1982 to become the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
BCID was founded in 1945 when it began offering prepaid hospital services to employee groups such as mining companies in the Northern Idaho area. After its first year, total enrollment across the state surpassed 10,000, and 25,000 more had subscribed by the end of the first year. BCID initially offered only hospital care but by the mid-50s, it was covering physician benefits, and in the 60s, it began covering, among other things, x-rays and lab tests.
Current Organization
Blue Cross of Idaho employs nearly 1000 at its corporate headquarters and even more at its district offices in Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston, Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls. BCID’s mission remains as clear as it was when it began over 60 years ago. It strives to cooperatively work with Idaho healthcare providers and bring its customers the highest quality and most cost-effective healthcare services.
