EXPENSIVE in recent years

We've been with Allstate since moving from CA 21 years ago. We've had no claims in over 15 years, have homeowners with Allstate also. I expected our rate to go up when my teenage son was added. It nearly doubled even though he was away at college with no car.
Last year I was told we got a nice discount on my sons coverage ($500/year). This year they took that away because he was not far enough away. He's at the same school, 85+/- miles away and the discount requires 100. When I asked to have this reinstated it was denied. Never mind that he's never home, and therefore drives very infrequently.

I decided to shop around. Quotes from AMICA, State Farm and Geico were all at least 30% lower for same coverage (in addition to being lower for homeowners and umbrella policy).
